This painting took a long time to find itself.

It went through several lives before it became this. The colours and the energy changed completely.

There’s a kind of hum to it now. The yellow and purple working against each other, and somehow together. Standing in the sea with the sun overhead and the cool water splashing around your legs is what this painting reminds me of.

I love the freedom you can feel in this piece.

The reds and yellows carry a lot of heat, which the blue sweeps through like a fresh breeze.

The air smelled different after the storm | 100 x 120 cm | Acrylic and mixed media on canvas, framed | £2,600

It’s a strange feeling, the time just after a launch. You build everything up for months and then it’s out there, and you just kind of move on to the next thing. A little anticlimactic, if I’m honest. But also I’m proud to have it finished and out in the world, I really love all of these paintings. They’ve surprised me in some ways too, they don’t look how I imagined they might before I started, but they still capture all the elements I wanted them to. The little moments of presence, the small repeated marks, the colours, and the sense of space and expansion.

This was the first piece I finished in this collection. And in a lot of ways it set the direction for everything that came after.

I loved the pebbly textures of those little dotty marks, the sea-spray-like flicked brushstrokes. And there’s a warmth to it that reminds me a bit of a sunset. It felt right from early on, and I just let the rest of the series follow from there.

Pebbles beneath my feet and wind in my hair | 100 x 100 cm | £2,200
