Southwater Post Offices (1867 and 1898)

Comments supporting photo 1 (Chestnuts):

The first Southwater Post Office was opened in 1867 at ‘The Chestnuts’ in Worthing Road. Henry Smith was the first Postmaster. The property was demolished but ‘The Chestnuts’ name remains at the location where 2 houses have been built– No 1 & No. 2 The Chestnuts.

Comments supporting photo 2 (Burchetts):

In 1880 James Burchett became the Postmaster and the post office moved ‘next door’ to his new General Stores and Post Office in 1899. The front of the property is still recognisable today as part of the MSV / Palmersports business, as is the original post office glass.
