We are inviting more entries for our art competition which we are holding in appreciation of former Civic Society member Cynthia Potter.
Some will remember Cynthia as an enthusiastic games teacher at Goole Grammar School. She was a talented hockey player and encouraged many girls to follow in her footsteps.
But she was also a talented artist - as shown in this lovely view of the Minster- and a supporter of our civic society.
So we would like amateur artists to submit entries illustrating some aspect of Howden. They can be in any medium and should be A4 or smaller. Only one entry per person and they must be the original work of the entrant.
Closing date is Friday 19th June and entries will be displayed on our stand at Howden Show.
There will be a prize of £100 for adult entrants and £50 for entrants under 16 [ give age on entry].
Further details from Philip Mepham via email on [email protected] or by phone on 07419127105

It was good to see everyone at the recent talk about the battle of Waterloo where Charles Ledsham, who is buried in Howden churchyard, fought and almost died.

We are looking forward now to our next meeting on Wednesday April 1st at 7.30pm when our speaker will be Howden resident Air Commodore Ian Stewart CBE.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday March 4th at 2pm in the Methodist church on Hailgate.

There will be a short - very short - AGM at the beginning - we really need volunteers to join us on the committee. Our small group is enthusiastic and very friendly - but we are very thinly stretched! Come and talk to us on Wednesday if you are interested.

Our speaker at the meeting will be Paul Brunyee of the Waterloo Association. He will be talking about Howden's own Waterloo hero, Charles Ledsham and his military career. He has promised to bring weapons to show us!!

Tea and coffee afterwards. Members free, visitors £3

Don't forget our meeting on Wednesday. Looking forward to an interesting talk by Chris Cade - he is an excellent speaker

On this special weekend let us also remember Howden's hero of the Battle of Waterloo, Charles Ledsham, whose grave in the Howden Minster churchyard is now marked with a brand new headstone. We plan to publish a booklet soon describing his life and exploits so watch this space.
