Check out Christopher Thompson’s work ‘𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘶𝘳 (𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘥)’ currently on view as part of the group exhibition, 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵 (𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭), curated by Brian Griffiths at Elizabeth Xi Bauer, Exmouth Market. Special event details for as follows:

📆 On 6th and 7th June as part of the sixth edition of London Gallery Weekend, the short story 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵 (1907) by Robert Walser will be read on the hour, every hour, throughout Saturday and Sunday. There is a link in our bi0 for free event sign up - join us there!

All artists in the exhibition have been invited to read the text. Each reading will be followed by a request or a response. The curator, Brian Griffiths, will be present awaiting queries, prompts, appeals and solicitations.

‘𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘶𝘳 (𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘥)’ was initially conceived and created for the .uk residency in 2025 as part of installation and exhibition ‘𝘙𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵’.

A little bonus edition as part of 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒙𝒙𝒊𝒊𝒏𝒈 is available through the gallery. This work in particular means a lot to us here at Xxijra Hii as it introduces the Maltese language into our programme for the first time (other than in our name of course).

‘𝘟𝘪𝘧𝘢𝘫𝘬’ is a slang term (pronunciation is close to ‘𝘴𝘩𝘪-𝘧𝘢𝘬𝘦’) which means something akin to ‘𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘭’ and this lovely little demon perches on our walls with his mischievous gaze following us around the gallery.

Our gorgeous group show continues this week 🧸

Romeo Roxman Gatt’s work returns the exhibition to language and to the bodies armored within it. The shoulder pad is the quintessential accessory for the ruthless and glorified performance of manhood: American football’s totem of masculinity, a sign you are not afraid of bashing your body into someone else’s. It is protective gear that actually means you can hit harder. The body is pressed into its mold, shaped by what is meant to protect it. Gatt’s sculptures, texts, and videos circle this paradox: the body crushed into a collective mold, armor as care, care as weapon, belonging as the price of protection.

More 𝒎𝒂𝒙𝒙𝒊𝒊𝒏𝒈…

Harrison Pearce’s kinetic sculptures stage a different intimacy. Unyielding industrial materials frame soft silicone forms, simultaneously cradled and stimulated by pneumatic pistons. The actuator appears to care, to tend, to tease, to push into the body with something that simulates attention. The machine performs care with absolute fidelity to its choreography. Cleaned, oiled, and rested, it presses on.

Caremaxxing does not resolve the contradiction it names. The works in this exhibition are unstable compounds: bodies and materials mid-reaction, changed by contact, bearing the imprint of what pressed into them. A forced poetics, a language born of collision and then seized from the mechanics that produced it.

𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒙𝒙𝒊𝒊𝒏𝒈 continues ✨

Reb Sangster’s paintings arrive at their surfaces through accumulated mediation. Internet sourced images are manipulated, negotiating between visual integrity and the digital sculpting software that corrupts it. New images are created from these renders and used as references for oil paintings, built in meticulous layers over weeks. The body of source materials is itself a body: passed through systems of optimization until it glistens and melts, dripping, oversaturated, pushed past coherence by the processes designed to perfect it.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙭𝙭 Is back! Our dedicated platform to small works. This time we welcome our good friend back with a new selection of his signature print based sculptures. Check the bi0 to see the full selection!

Small sculptural works assemble imagery lifted from printed material. Polished fragmentary aesthetic, scattered imagery on shaped surfaces instantly familiar yet unknowable.

Alluding to image making of the past, motifs often recall nature and still life. The resulting ghostly image can hold an allure for us in a world saturated with digital images.

A show of soft armour, hard surfaces, engineered desire and emotional leakage. 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒙𝒙𝒊𝒊𝒏𝒈 lingers where care slips into control and self-making starts to look a little unwell. Come for the gloss, stay for the crisis… 🧸🩷

Featuring works by Arvida Byström, Harrison Pearce, Romeo Roxman Gatt and Reb Sangster, curated in collaboration with Yuli Serfaty and with texts by Anitra Lourie.

We’re super excited for this one - also opening alongside Studio/Chapple and Plicnik Space Initiative on the same night 🤝✨
