In partnership with Verso Books, join author Matthew Cole and writer and editor Amelia Horgan, who will discuss Cole’s new book, which upends conventional wisdom about how we value work, exposing wage theft as one of capitalism’s enduring open secrets.

From unpaid overtime and under-the-table jobs to algorithmic exploitation, there are as many ways to steal wages as there are to pay them. But what if wage theft isn’t a bug but a feature of capitalism itself?

✨Today we’re looking back at some of the work produced by our 2025 cohort of Peer Ambassadors.

🎞️This summer, Ambassadors took part in a direct animation workshop with not/nowhere (.nowhere), led by Leena Habiballa. 🎞️

⚡️The group explored notions of safety in relation to their bodies through a series of collective  movement exercises before experimenting with different direct animation techniques.

💚Special thanks to Leena, Michael and not/nowhere for hosting the Peer Ambassadors.

🧬This event was programmed as part of Alex Kyle Mitchel’s talks and events programme that accompanied her exhibition ‘In the Goal of our Health’ at Peer.

🌱In August we launched ‘At Home’, a new permanent public mural created with London-based artist Mohammed Z. Rahman (.z.r.supply) and the Peer Ambassadors.

🎪The project was developed through six months of workshops, research and conversations with local residents, market traders, shop owners and stakeholders.

🎤As part of the research process, the Ambassadors conducted oral history interviews with members of the local community in Hoxton and developed four key questions to ask them:

1. What makes you stop and think?
2. How does Hoxton make you feel?
3. What one item in your house best represents your culture?
4. What art do you want to see in Hoxton?

👀Look out for more insights in the coming weeks.

🛖 ’At Home’ is produced by Peer, London, and commissioned by Hackney Council as part of ‘Connecting Hoxton’ 2025.
