Announcing our next exhibition:
Paula Sanders & Sheila Vollmer:

“Colour + Space” | 5-14 June 2026

Gallery White Box, 5 Hare and Billet Rd, Blackheath, London, SE3 0RB.

Sensitively modulated colours adopt evocative forms in this meeting of oil painting and sculpture

Plus! A rare chance to hear from Steve Joy in person, as the renowned artist will be in the gallery for an intimate artist talk on Sunday, 31st May at 3pm. (Book via link in bio)

With Colour + Space, .sanders shares a group of oil paintings made over the last 12 months, along with smaller works on paper dating from 2020.

With more time spent at home in her studio, Sanders became attuned to different aspects of the domestic environment. Sometimes, just sitting quietly, something will pop into focus and present itself as a potential subject, following a particular set of colours, shapes, or spaces.

Sanders responds to “what’s there” as a personal record of how we live, rather than setting out to formally arrange a group of objects. In this, she endeavours to hold on to something that has resonated in some way, whether personal, emotional, funny, or revealing - and enjoys the anticipation of recording it before that something changes.

For this exhibition, Sanders’ oil paintings will be accompanied by sculptures in steel, perspex, wax, and more by Canadian sculptor .

Building her forms musically in space, Vollmer’s abstract studies of architectural structures and natural systems of growth can’t help but transmit a delicate sense of familiarity that perfectly complements Sanders’ nostalgia for the present.

Steve Joy - “Icons and Old Gold”

A series of new works on wood and paper by renowned abstract painter Steve Joy.

🗓️ 22-31 May 2026 / Open Friday-Sunday (10am-5pm), or by appointment.

🗺️ Gallery White Box, 5 Hare and Billet Rd, Blackheath, London, SE3 0RB.

Full details in our latest newsletter (gallerywhitebox.substack.com / link in bio)

Icons and Old Gold represents Steve Joy’s attempts to reconcile the often-undefined spiritual elements of abstract expressionism with the artist’s own longstanding engagement with the techniques and phenomena of Eastern European Orthodox icon painting.

From smaller studies on paper to larger paintings of up to two or three metres, Joy’s work with gold leaf, wood, and beeswax hints at the divine while situating the beholder in a material world of colour, rhythm, and presence.

Icons and Old Gold is Steve Joy’s first London exhibition in 45 years, the artist having spent much of the intervening time working in Norway, Japan, France, and New York. He is currently working between London and Orient, New York.

A beautiful day for a pint and a painting. Follow the birds down to Blackheath, by the Hare & Billet pond and pub.

Steve Joy’s first London exhibition since a Serpentine show curated by Miranda Strickland-Constable in 1981 opens at Gallery White Box, Blackheath, this weekend.

In those 45 intervening years, the renowned abstract painter completed his second MFA in Kyoto, held Professorships in Norway and France, and has lately worked primarily from the U.S., where he has work in New York’s Lincoln Center, the United States Embassy Collection, and the Joslyn Art Museum, Nebraska.

Art lovers will recognise, in Joy’s new paintings, a lineage that stretches back to the vibrant abstract modernism of Rothko and Po***ck. But experiencing the paintings in person reveals a deeper vein leading to ancient icons and artifacts, whether devotional, secular, or too mysterious to call.

Joy updates these influences by adjusting the boundaries between the spiritual and material, and fascinating viewers with the ever-changing colour and light in each work - which, as he discusses below, is no mean feat in the age of the smartphone.
