Can you help us find out a bit more information about this image?

This photo was discovered during recent renovations at Suddabys. Taken on the site of the Roman Fort, not far from the drill hall at the corner of Greengate and Maltongate, the men are members of the 50th (Northumbrian) Division Royal Engineers Signals Company, and their telephone sets and semaphore flags can be seen in the foreground.

There was one signals company allocated to a division; at full strength, it would number 162 men commanded by a major. There were likely several detachments at other drill halls around the county, which came together when the 50th Division mobilised in 1914.

The sergeant to the left of the photograph carries two crossed flags above his chevrons, denoting he was a qualified signals instructor and probably commanded the detachment. The major in the centre, perhaps visiting for an inspection.

There are no Royal Engineers recorded on the Malton War Memorial, but Maurice D'Hooge, Sapper 38614, is recorded on St Peter's Memorial. He died on 15 Feb 1919 from the effects of being gassed one year earlier and is buried in Norton Cemetery.

Malton and Norton have an expansive history with the horse racing industry, spanning centuries.

In our next town tour, we will explore this element of local history, touching on the medieval horse markets and the many 18th century coaching inns. The tour covers key buildings and spaces in town which contributed to Malton becoming one of the most successful racing towns.

The tour will commence at Malton Museum on Saturday 5th September at 11 am, offering a perfect opportunity to learn all about local racing history ahead of the Stables Open Day on Sunday 6th September.

Join us for our next major event as we host a Regency Weekend!

Comprising a country ball and soirée, enjoy a resplendent couple of days filled with music, dance, and entertainment inspired by the early nineteenth century.

The Malton Country Ball takes place on Friday 9th October in the Milton Rooms and the Regency Soirée on Saturday 10th October at York House. Music will be provided by The Ebor Quartet and dance expertise from Lottie Adcock.

In the meantime, Dance the Past are offering dance classes to prepare you for the events, held at Old Malton War Memorial Hall. The next class is on Sunday 30th August at 2 pm.
