Crate is an artist-led organisation based in Margate Kent supporting contemporary visual artists’ res The building opened in July 2006.

Crate is an artist-led organisation based in East Kent supporting contemporary visual artists’ research and practice. Crate promotes critical debate and the exchange of ideas without prescribed outcomes. Based in an old print works near the sea front in Margate, Crate’s building has been bought and refurbished with major support from Arts Council England South East, East Kent Partnership and Thane

t District Council. The building combines working and project space and is designed to give artists access to dedicated, affordable space for experimentation, production, documentation and research. There are three floors of studios, and two project spaces on the ground floor. The project spaces are available for short-term use by practitioners, alongside a programme initiated by Crate. Crate is located in Bilton Square, which is off the High Street in Margate. STUDIO SPACE AT CRATE:

The studios are on three floors which are permanent and let to fine artists following an application process. There are 5 individual/shared studios – including 1 wheelchair accessible unit on the ground floor. The studios vary in size from 170 sq feet to 230 sq feet. Crate maintain a waiting list of artists seeking studio space. Applications for studio space must include:
• Visual material (5 images max) and/or DVD (5 mins length max)
• A short statement of practice
• A CV

A selection process will follow application and a panel made up of members of the Board of Trustees and studio holders will make decisions. For an application form and further details contact:

✨CRATE CRITS ✨Sunday the 25th of January, 2-4pm ✨

CRATE presents Crate Crits, a series of free crit sessions for artists.

An opportunity to test out new work and hone your critical and discursive abilities in a supportive environment.

The first crit will feature two Crate artists who have pieces in the show “Off Register”. As a group, we will take time to experience the work, and then discuss it in depth, offering our impressions and constructive feedback.

CRATE Studio and Project Space Presents "Off Register"
A group show featuring the Crate community of studio holders, staff, programmers and trustees. Aimed at regrouping and bringing us together as we begin the lead up to our 20th Anniversary Celebration this summer.

Members of the public are also invited to join us on Sunday 25th between 2pm and 4pm for our first CRATE CRITS, a series of free crit sessions for artists. Starting with 2 artists from the group show, we will take time to experience their work, and discuss it in depth, offering our impressions and constructive feedback.

Featuring; Steven Alan, Catherine Chinatree, Leigh Clarke, Moyra Derby, Benedict Drew, Jo Murray, Vicki Salmi, Chiara Williams.

Friday 23rd, 6pm - 9pm.

CRATE CRITS ✨Sunday 30th of November 2-4pm

CRATE presents Crate Crits, a series of free crit sessions for Thanet based artists.

An opportunity to test out new work and hone your critical and discursive abilities in a supportive environment.

Each crit will feature the work of two artists, who will install their work in the CRATE project space. As a group, we will take time to experience the work, and then discuss it in depth, offering our impressions and constructive feedback.

The first crit will take place on Sunday the 30th of November from 2-4pm.
