What can a pair of sugar tongs, a teacup or a camera tell us about the British Empire?

Everyday objects can carry stories that reach far beyond the places where they were used.

History in Objects: Empire and Everyday Life uses objects from Narberth Museum to explore how familiar materials and products, including sugar, tea, coffee, rubber and mahogany, were connected to colonialism and inequality. It also considers how these histories continue to affect our lives today.

The resource includes discussion questions and activities such as mapping the British Empire, following an object’s story, examining historical photographs and creating a decolonised classroom display.

It asks learners to consider where objects came from, who benefited from them and whose experiences were left out of their stories.

Sarah from Starflower Arts is returning to Narberth Museum this autumn with Weave the Seasons that will show you how to create a unique woven wall hanging taking inspiration from the seasons.

Our volunteers have excellent local history knowledge so we've been finding out what items in our collection are their favourites.

We start this month with Elaine, our treasurer, who has been volunteering at the museum since 2002. Elaine is in every day to make sure our books are balanced, the signs are out and the dog bowls are topped up.

She's also celebrating a very special birthday next month (and I have checked that it's ok to share this). Elaine will be 80 at the end of October! Happy birthday Elaine! 🎂🎊🎈
