Carisbrooke Castle Museum Presents:
πŸ“£ Paul AT Wilson – Fragments of the Isle of Wight

Step into the strange, half-forgotten world of 19th-century island storytelling with Isle of Wight Miscellany by Ebenezer Hartnell, a curious collection of folklore, local history, and uncanny tales gathered from across the Island.

In this atmospheric evening talk, Paul AT Wilson explores the voices and stories Hartnell preserved: whispers of hauntings, fragments of rural life, and echoes of beliefs that once shaped the Isle of Wight’s identity. Through selected readings, these long-silent tales are brought back to life, including material never published and only recently rediscovered in Hartnell’s own handwriting.

The journey continues through handwritten notes, forgotten connections, and the mysterious figure of Abraham Elder, author of Tales and Legends of the Isle of Wight. Some mysteries are simply too intriguing to ignore.

Blending history, storytelling, and performance, this promises to be a fascinating evening exploring the Island’s hidden past, where truth and myth are never quite as far apart as they seem.

We Need Your Help!

Two historic portraits at Carisbrooke Castle Museum are in need of urgent conservation.

The portraits of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry are part of the story of our Museum’s founding and our heritage, but time and environment are taking their toll.

We are raising Β£2,500 to bring in a trained conservator to carefully restore and stabilise both works so they can be preserved for future generations.

Every donation, large or small, directly supports the treatment of these paintings.

If you can help, please donate or share this campaign.

πŸ“£ The Latter Days of King Charles I: From Carisbrooke to Chopping Block
This talk regales the remarkable and emotive story of this famous monarch. It explains how his self-belief and royal high-handedness, combined with a clumsy stubbornness, led Charles successively but tragically into Civil War and defeat, captivity, flight to the Isle of Wight, imprisonment in Carisbrooke Castle, and ultimately (after endless plotting and many intriguing escape attempts) to his β€˜trial’ and ex*****on in London – bringing an end, temporarily at least, to the monarchy he so adored..
