Re-live the days of the steam railway at Stephenson Steam Railway in North Shields, home to the North Tyneside Steam Railway. Our star exhibit is George Stephenson's 'Billy' locomotive, built in 1816 and the third oldest surviving steam locomotive in the world. As well as exhibiting a range of fascinating locomotives, we also run lots of family-friendly events throughout the year. Please check our

As a heritage railway, we are exempt from certain aspects of the Equality Act. We regret that we are unable to offer wheelchair access onto our carriages as the door openings are restricted to 55cm. Built in 1939 by Peckett & Sons for the Ashington Coal Company, this hardworking saddle tank spent 30 years hauling coal wagons across one of Britain’s most extensive colliery railways - and even ran passenger trains for miners!

As steam gave way to diesel, No.5 was sold by the National Coal Board in 1970 to the North Norfolk Railway. Then in 1991, it found a new home here at the railway, where it was proudly given the name “Jackie Milburn” in honour of the great footballer who grew up in Ashington.
