THIS WEEK AT BEAM

✨ The final 2 weeks left to see John Newling’s exhibition ‘Bowls and Books; Water to Ash’
&
✨ John Newling, book launch and in conversation with Beam director Jonathan Casciani, Thursday 19th, 6–9pm, only a few tickets left. Book a place here: https://tinyurl.com/beam-john-newling-talk

These recent works by Newling are a poetic conversation of different materials, exploring the relationship of humans within the natural world. Echoing the natural forces of the Earth, the artist used processes such as burning, splitting, crushing, filtering, and corroding to create a series of objects with extraordinarily delicate textures and varying natural hues. Some of the materials are ‘painted’ by the natural elements: rains, winds, heat and soils are all deployed as transformational techniques that affect the surface of the material. Newling views these works as being developed with an alchemical process in co-relationship with nature.

✨ The Beauty of Everyday Things by Soetsu Yanagi ✨
This timeless classic gently teaches us to see the extraordinary in the ordinary — from a well-worn teacup to a simple wooden spoon. Yanagi invites us to rediscover the quiet elegance and soulful beauty of everyday objects, reminding us that beauty isn’t always loud — sometimes it’s humble, useful, and right in front of us.

Now available on the shelf at Beam 📚☕️

Water served in Duralex glasses – just like it was at school (in the 80s, if you can remember that far back).

Open Thurs–Sat, 9am–5ppm
Come and explore, linger, and be inspired.

Our perfect pairing this week is a delicious orange crumble cheesecake by the inestimable with a cup of the wonderfully named Fidel Huancas 2024 from Peru by on filter.

The coffee is bright and structured, with fruit-forward notes and a juicy texture that reflects the hallmark vibrancy of high-grown Peruvian coffee.

Ania’s cheesecake is a perfect example of its kind, smooth, soft and rich with the inspired addition of an orange jam which carries a smart bitterness and slightly tingles in the mouth, all this and with the added bonus of nuggets of crunchy crumble bits. PERFECT.

We’re open 9am-5pm from tomorrow until Saturday.

Ai loved the ‘perfect pairs’ idea and suggested (among many others) the caption:

‘Coffee is the frame. Cake is the artwork.’

While on one level, I of course absolutely love that suggestion, it is unfortunately on quite a low level. It’s certainly tight to concept though so it’s a patronising ‘well done there’ from me to the all knowing interface, if anything. And of course well done to you, you made it to the end - see you for a well earned coffee.
