Today's with Art UK is all about murals!

Our pick is this work by Nicolas Dixon, which can be found in Oldfield Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire.

🔵 🟡 'Bielsa the Redeemer' in Leeds United colours shows Marcelo Bielsa in the pose of the 'Christ the Redeemer' statue, which famously towers over Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The piece took a week to paint, after the artist projected the image onto the wall in the middle of the night to get the outline, and then painted the backdrop in his abstract style. The words ‘marchando juntos dos mil veinte’ surround Bielsa – meaning 'Marching on together 2020' in Spanish. Andy McVeigh assisted with the painting of the piece.

📸 Iona by Samuel John Peploe (b.1871, d. 1935). On loan from The Hugo Burge Foundation courtesy Lyon & Turnbull.

Peploe first visited Iona in 1920 with fellow Scottish Colourist F.C.B. Cadell, and they returned together most summers. He especially loved the rocky north of the island and its views across to Mull.

Inspired by Iona’s light and changeable weather, Peploe painted the island in all conditions. He moved away from the warm colours of his still lifes, using cool greens and blues instead. Iona became a peaceful escape from life in Edinburgh, and its picture-postcard scenery also meant that his paintings were readily saleable.

On display in 'The Scottish Colourists Revealed' until 26 October 2026.

🙏 Supported by Aviva & Lyon & Turnbull

🖼️ Paintings on display include works from the collection of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) , Aviva, National Trust for Scotland, University of Dundee, The University of Edinburgh, and The Hugo Burge Foundation.

Sometimes artists begin with colour and shapes instead of drawing. Join us to explore bright colours, paint bold shapes and add lines, inspired by the Scottish Colourists.

You’ll take a quick look in the gallery to learn about the artists, then create your own colourful artwork using paint, pens and pastels. It’s relaxed, creative and fun – no experience needed.

🌑 Once in a blue moon?

Inspired by today's full moon, a blue moon, here's "Perth Rail Bridge by Moonlight" by Janet Hooper.

The railway boom of the mid-19th century transformed Perthshire and the Scottish Highlands. A direct rail link to the rest of Britain brought an influx of artists and holidaymakers, leaving a lasting mark on landscape painting.

As trains carved their way through dramatic glens, hills, and valleys, they revealed new vistas and perspectives—opening up fresh compositions and artistic possibilities.

This photograph, taken around 1940, comes from the Molly Forgan Collection and shows a former 18th‑century building that once stood at the corner of Perth’s High Street and Watergate. The building was demolished in 1954 to make way for an extension to the General Accident building on the left, which was completed in September 1959.
