It's 'discovery' for this week's with Art UK for Wiltshire and the World: John Aubrey and the Quest for Knowledge at Chippenham Museum.

🎨 We had a colourful time learning more about The Colourists at our family Hands On Art Session! First, we talked a bit about the artists with Kerry, and then we explored the paintings using our mini cameras to capture our favourite pieces. We used paint, pastels and black lines to try out their bright style! We did an awesome job capturing all the colours they used.

We were delighted to welcome journalist, broadcaster and former politician Michael Portillo today for a visit to our exhibition, The Scottish Colourists Revealed.

Michael’s grandfather, John Waldegrave Blyth, was a linen manufacturer from Kirkcaldy who invested in contemporary art, including works by the four Scottish Colourists: S.J. Peploe, J.D. Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter and Francis Cadell.

One painting in particular caught Michael’s attention—J.D. Fergusson’s The Conversation (c.1907), which was once part of his family’s collection.

The Conversation is on display in 'The Scottish Colourists Revealed' until 26 October 2026.

Vase and Flower on Book

The creamy application of paint on this swiftly executed panel has a fluency and fluidity that suggests the influence of the French Impressionist Édouard Manet (1832–1883). The lightening of John Duncan Fergusson’s palette owes much to the Impressionists’ emphasis on the artistic importance of light. Fergusson’s views aligned with theirs following visits to Parisian galleries and trips to the north-west coast of France with his lifelong friend S. J. Peploe (1871–1935). In 1905, he expressed this clearly in the introduction to his exhibition at the Baillie Galleries in London: ‘That he (the artist) is striving for truth, for reality through light. That to the realist in painting, light is the mystery; for form and colour, which are the painter’s only means of representing life, exist only on account of light.’

On display in 'The Scottish Colourists Revealed' until 26 October 2026.

Our pick today is "Bobby Charlton" by Peter Douglas Edwards, from the collection at the National Portrait Gallery. The portrait was commissioned to commemorate the 25th anniversary of England's World Cup win in 1966.
