The Scottish Colourists Revealed exhibition at Perth Art Gallery closes on Monday 26 October!

Happy Birthday, Lys Hansen!

Today we are celebrating the 90th birthday of one of Scotland’s most significant living artists, with news of a major retrospective exhibition at Perth Art Gallery.

Opening 27 November 2026, Lys Hansen: A Retrospective brings together over 35 artworks, including large-scale paintings and sculptures, alongside a new artwork created during the development of this exhibition, The Brave and the Fallen (2026).

The show will also include a large-scale work held in the collections cared for by Culture Perth & Kinross, "How Wisdom and Folly Meet, Mix and Unite, How Virtue and Vice Blend Their Black and Their White" (1987).

Born in 1936, Hansen has spent more than six decades creating powerful paintings and sculptures that explore memory, identity, conflict and human relationships. Widely recognised as one of Scotland’s leading figurative expressionist artists, Hansen’s work combines deeply personal experiences with reflections on major historical events.

Supported by Falkirk Leisure and Culture, and developed with curatorial advice from Dr Marianne Greated, Head of Art at the University of Edinburgh, Lys Hansen: A Retrospective offers a unique opportunity to experience the breadth and depth of an extraordinary artistic career. Spanning decades of creative practice, the exhibition invites visitors to engage with works that are both intensely personal and universally resonant.

This exhibition has been supported by Museums Galleries Scotland and Trauma Healing Together.

You'll learn simple glass-cutting techniques, explore a range of colourful materials, and discover how the fusing process works. 👤 'Summer - Head of Woman' by JD Fergusson

A letter to Margaret Morris from Fergusson explains the inspiration for this carved portrait made in the garden of his mother's Edinburgh home.

'The sculpture on the whole is going very well... The new stand I made is quite a success...Tell K. I'm putting the feeling of the last time I saw her, into my sculpture - full and round'.

The K. that Fergusson refers to was Kathleen Dillon, one of Morris's dance students that he had met in London. He had painted a portrait of her called 'Rose Rhythm' (private collection) the previous month. The links between portrait and sculpture are enhanced by the rose-coloured stone chosen.
