Can you help us tell the story of the build-up to D-Day?

Do you have family stories, memories, photographs, diaries or other items about the build-up to D-Day? Whether a member of your family was a veteran or living in the area we would really like to hear from you.

As part of Hampshire's Hidden D-Day project we are looking to collect material to tell the story of D-Day preparations.

A typescript draft war diary of No.1 RAF Beach Squadron, which landed in Normandy on D-Day. The war diary covers the period 13.5.1944 to 30.6.1944, including the week or so before D-Day when the squadron's men were in Hampshire and West Sussex waiting to embark.

in 1944 Erwin Rommel, the German commander in Normandy, went to Germany for his wife’s birthday which was on 6 June.

He planned to return to France on 8 June, and believed that the weather was too bad for the Allies to land in the meantime.

Rommel is featured in panel 7 of the 83 metre Overlord Embroidery. Commissioned by Lord Dulverton and designed by artist Sandra Lawrence it depicts D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 34 extraordinary hand-stitched panels, embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework.

Ahead of the 82nd anniversary of D-Day a beacon that stood at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is now outside LCT7074.

The beacon features five steel plates, each named after one of the Normandy landing beaches. Above each name is a glass capsule containing sand from that beach.

It was originally commissioned for the D-Day 80 anniversary.

in 1944 there is a security scare when, for the fifth time in a month, one of the D-Day codenames appears as a crossword clue in the Daily Telegraph – in this case 'Neptune', the code for the naval assault crossing.

It turns out that this is just a bizarre coincidence: a Surrey school headmaster compiled the crosswords months ago.

The picture shows the orders for Operation Neptune, the naval part of Operation Overlord. They were issued in thick booklets by Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay, the Allied Naval Commander.

Saturday 6 June marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day.

To commemorate The D-Day Story’s curator Andrew Whitmarsh will be presenting two talks focusing on some of our recent acquisitions and the Overlord Embroidery.

The two talks will be repeated throughout the weekend, and will last approximately 20 minutes with an opportunity to ask Andrew questions at the end

Talks are free of charge. No need to book. Capacity is limited so please arrive in advance to secure your seat.

Please note standard admission charges to visit the museum galleries, Overlord Embroidery and Landing Craft Tank 7074 apply.
