May 12th is International Nurses Day πŸ©ΊπŸ’ŠπŸ©Ή marking the birth of Florence Nightingale. Widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing, she, alongside many other notable women, helped pave the way for generations of compassionate carers whose dedication continues to support the welfare and wellbeing of our nation.

Today, we celebrate and thank all the incredible nurses working across the NHS and private sectors. Your resilience, professionalism, and tireless work makes such a difference.

Zachary Merton hospital was built in Rustington in 1936, and from 1939 throughout the Second World War, provided 30+ beds for mothers and babies. Zachary Merton remained a maternity hospital until 1979, before later becoming a convalescent home.

Take a look through these wonderful archive photographs from the hospital’s history.
