Dunwich Museum

Dunwich Museum From great port to tiny hamlet in 700 years. This is the story of erosion and decline. A small museum with a big story. It's well worth the visit.

Dunwich Museum is a small independent museum maintained by volunteers and donations from visitors. The museum tells the story of the great medieval town on the Suffolk coast that was lost to the sea. Dunwich is now a small village but was once the most important port on the east coast of Britain. The museum houses a collection of artefacts from Roman times onwards. There is also an evocative model

of the large medieval town and a local volunteer on hand to explain the dramatic story of coastal change. The museum has made a 45 minute film about this amazing story. A 3 minute version is available to view within the museum. The museum is family friendly and welcomes all ages.

Dunwich is rich in wildlife for you to discover. We shall be running three day 'safaris' this summer led by expert naturalists to introduce you to the wealth of local wildlife, discovering and identifying plants of varied habitats (shingle, marsh, woodland and heath). You will be getting to know nature in depth!

Our first Wildlife Safari of 2026 will be focusing on the local flora of Dunwich, led by Dr Stephen Clarkson. Come with us for a day delving into the diverse plant life of our coastal environment.
We will also be training you on how to make field recording and drawings of what you find with the help of Stephanie Hartick from Art Branches.

These days are brought to you in partnership between Dunwich Museum and members of the Suffolk Naturalists’ Society who record the county’s species, as well as support from Art Branches and with a grant from the Suffolk County Council and Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape Sustainable Development Fund. Each day will include introductions to key local habitats, with field excursions to find species and record them, with opportunities to examine the plants and animals more closely. We will contribute to knowledge about Suffolk biodiversity, as our species records will be sent to the county’s database, as well as enhancing our knowledge about Dunwich wildlife. Who know what we will find?

These days will appeal to anyone interested in Suffolk's wonderful wildlife!

Bring a camera, a hand lens (x10 magnification), and a note book and pen for field recording.
