Visitors are given a unique and immersive prison experience combined with first class customer service. Shepton Mallet Prison was built in 1625 and closed in 2013, making it the countries oldest prison. with over 400 years of history behind its high walls, Shepton Mallet Prison is a must see heritage site.

Lets get October started with a true story from one of our Guides...

While leading a tour through Shepton Mallet Prison’s ex*****on chamber, Paul began telling the story of Private Lee Davis—an executed inmate known to have been a heavy smoker. Then something happened that nobody could explain.

Paul suddenly felt a searing pain in his hand. Moments later, a mark resembling a cigarette burn appeared on his skin. Visitors reportedly felt the temperature drop as an uneasy silence filled the chamber.

On 12 October 1944, American serviceman Madison Thomas was executed at Shepton Mallet Prison.

The 23-year-old, from Arnaudville, Louisiana, had been convicted of ra**ng Beatrice Reynolds. His court martial took place in Plymouth on 21 August 1944, and his ex*****on was carried out by Thomas Pierrepoint, assisted by his nephew Albert.

During the Second World War, Shepton Mallet served as an American military prison, holding servicemen convicted under US military law. Thomas’s ex*****on forms part of this difficult chapter in the prison’s history.

Sharing these accounts means acknowledging the crimes and their consequences, while remembering the victims whose lives were affected. Beatrice Reynolds is an essential part of this history, and her name should not be forgotten.
