Built between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete. Visitor facilities include the Orangery Restaurant, Gift Shop, Garden of Surprises, Sculpture Garden and beautiful walks around the historic parkland laid out by Capability Brown and still occupied by a herd of fallow deer. History can come alive in a single trip whether it is to enjoy a guided tour, take a dog for a walk in the park, see the Teddy Bears' picnic in the Garden of Surprises or take time over lunch in the Orangery.

Autumn is one of the very best times to explore Burghley Park. The colours come alive, and our fallow deer herd roam freely throughout the parkland, often venturing across the common walking routes and viewing spots visitors enjoy each day.

A truly spectacular sight, which we fully encourage you to watch and admire, but please do so from a safe distance.

It’s currently rutting season, meaning our young and mature bucks can become unpredictable in their behaviour. So, there are a few things we ask of you at this time of year:

⚠️ Please do not approach the deer and always keep a safe distance. Admire them from afar, bring your camera along to capture special moments like these!

🦮 Please keep dogs on leads at all times. It’s not just the deer we need to protect and keep safe, we also have other livestock across areas of the Parkland.

🗑️ Please put your rubbish in the bin. We’re all for picnics in the park and coffees on the go, but we ask that all litter is disposed of in one of the many bins across the site. Deer are naturally curious and may try to eat ANY items left on the ground, so please help us keep the Parkland clean and our herd safe.

Spooky season has arrived at Burghley! 🎃☠️

Our Halloween Trail is now open in the Sculpture Garden. Follow the trail to uncover hidden ghosts and ghouls, solve riddles and earn a tasty treat at the finish. And don’t forget your Halloween costume! 🧟‍♂️

FREE admission to the Halloween Trail with a Day Ticket or Annual Pass. Open daily, 10am–5pm, until Sunday 1 November.

The Diplomat Season 4, featuring Burghley House, is now streaming on Netflix!

The hit political drama features an acclaimed cast including Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Aidan Turner, Celia Imrie, Bradley Whitford and Rory Kinnear.

Filmed at Burghley this spring, the House takes centre stage as Windsor Castle, with scenes featuring a US Presidential convoy travelling through the parkland and a major political gathering inside Burghley’s North Court.

We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated and conservation-minded Shepherd to join the team at the Burghley Estate.

With responsibility for an established flock of around 600 sheep and a small herd of British White cattle, this is an exciting opportunity to take the lead on a thriving livestock enterprise across approximately 700 acres of Burghley parkland.

From the day-to-day care and welfare of the flock to managing grazing with conservation and biodiversity in mind, this is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of one of England’s most historic estates.

With accommodation and a vehicle provided, this is a unique opportunity to live and work in a beautiful historic landscape while playing an important role in the care of the Estate’s livestock and parkland.
