The pheasant taking flight almost feels like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a flash of colour and pure momentum.

Originally native to Asia it has become stitched into the British landscape. You spot one darting through the undergrowth or hear that loud unmistakable call from a hedgerow and suddenly it is obvious why the pheasant has become an enduring symbol of the countryside.

If you have ever had one explode into the air a few feet in front of you you will know the feeling.

A tiercel peregrine cuts through a cold, cloud-heavy sky with talons dropped and eyes locked, while grey partridges explode away in panic. 'Inverness Grouse' five red grouse taking flight across Scottish moorland with granite rocks and heather below and a brooding sky above.

Grouse are iconic birds of Scotland's upland moorlands, symbolising the rugged beauty of the country's wild landscapes. Two species are most prominent: the red grouse, with its rich chestnut plumage perfectly camouflaged among heather, and the ptarmigan, which turns pure white in winter to blend into snowy peaks. These ground-dwelling birds thrive in the vast, open moors and are integral to the ecosystem, feeding on heather shoots, seeds, and berries.

Meet the partridge: a true icon of the countryside.

Partridges are very social birds and move in small groups called coveys as they forage for seeds, grains, and insects. Their best defence is patience: they can freeze perfectly still to avoid predators. But if they are startled they switch instantly to a quick, explosive burst of flight.

Have you ever seen a covey lift off from the field near you?
