Did you know that our GSWR carriage No. 861 is the longest wooden body carriage in Ireland measuring 20.1m (66ft). She is also the last surviving twelve wheeled brake tri-composite carriage, as well as having a first, second and third class accommodation.

Her other claim to fame is that she was the last gas lit carriage until her end of active service in the 1980s.

Whitehead Railway Museum is once again proud to be involved in the annual Industrial Heritage Week (IHW) which is being run by Mid & East Antrim Borough Council.

This year’s IHW runs from June 1 to June 6. WRM’s entry is entitled “Raising Steam at Whitehead”.

The five-minute video features RPSI volunteer fireman Matthew who explains the procedure involved in getting 3BG Guinness ready to operate train rides at Whitehead. Matthew tells how a careful balance has to be struck between ensuring that the locomotive has sufficient steam pressure to start the train while making sure that the water level in the boiler is neither too low or too high.

The battle continues to remove decades of grime, rust and soot from the awkward H spoke wheels of the tender for engine No.184.

However progress is steady especially with the return of John from holiday, lending an extra pair of hands. The work is tough going but the results speak for themselves! Here's a nice shot of a cleaned up wheel getting its weather-proof paint from Gill.

Amazing work everyone. Thank you!
