Thank you to everyone who supported our Big Give campaign.

With your help, we raised over £13,000 through the campaign, unlocking vital match funding to help children and young people find inspiration, creativity and joy in the arts when they need it most. Since the campaign closed, further gifts and Gift Aid have taken the total to over £18,000, which is a wonderful result.

We are also grateful to the donor who provided match funding and believes deeply in this work, helping every pound given to go further. Together, this shared commitment will enhance local children and young people’s connection to their local museum or gallery and access to creative opportunities

Today we mark the 49th International Museum Day! A day founded to celebrate the international museum community, develop “mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people,” as set out by the IMD committee. Each year tens of thousands of museums take part: over 37,000 from 158 countries in 2025 alone!

There has always been an inherent relationship between museums, learning and debate. Museum heritage stretches back to the medieval universities of Europe, with public museums emerging from the 16th century onwards. Our museum itself was purpose-built in 1903. With more than 2,000 museums across the UK, we are rich with opportunities for debate, discovery, and shared understanding. By safeguarding heritage, offering spaces for reflection, and welcoming visitors of all ages, museums remain spaces of education and connection.

This year’s theme, ‘Museums Uniting a Divided World,’ is particularly poignant. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the International Council of Museums, it highlights the power of museums and the wider heritage sector to bridge cultural, social, and geopolitical divides. Museums foster conversation, encourage critical thinking, and create inclusive spaces where communities can meet, question, and learn together.

This year’s theme also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, a set of seventeen goals to be achieved by 2030 set out by the United Nations. By promoting reduced inequalities through learning and inclusive programming, supporting peace, justice and strong institutions through trusted spaces for dialogue and difficult histories, and strengthening partnerships through collaboration across communities, museums are in essence what the two organisations stand for: connecting people through education and understanding.

Helping us learn about our past; while encouraging curiosity about the future, museums keep history alive and allow us to reflect on our past as a means of moving towards a brighter future.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to our Children and Young People’s Fund during our match funding campaign so far.

Your generosity is directly funding creative programmes across our venues, that provide safe spaces for children to express themselves, explore their emotions and build self-confidence.

Could you help us to help even more children and young people? We’d love to reach our target and have a little way to go!

By donating what you can before midday on 15th May, your contribution will be doubled, thanks to a very generous supporter of our work.

For more information about the work of our Children and Young People’s Fund and to make your donation, head to the Big Give platform here: https://buff.ly/0CIreUT
