From Natela Grigalashviliโ€™s ongoing series โ€œDoukhoborsโ€™ Landโ€

Doukhobors are a Spiritual Christian ethnoreligious group who were relocated from Russia in 19th century, after refusing to change their faith. They settled down in Samtskhe-Javakheti region, near Ninotsminda in around 1841, and founded 8 villages. Nowadays, due to harsh geographical and living conditions, only about 150 of them live in their biggest village Goralovka and their traditions and culture is endangered.

Natela Grigalashvili is one of the first Georgian documentary photographers, who photographs rural communities with her own original vision in such a way that each photo, along with being a document reflecting the lives of these people, is a mixture of emotions and empathy. She has been working on projects โ€œThe Doukhoborsโ€, and the โ€œFinal days of Georgian Nomadsโ€, and has finished the โ€œVillage of Miceโ€ series. She founded a first photo-agency in Georgia โ€œKontakt Photosโ€ in 2015.

These past weeks have been quite busy at Fotografia! ๐Ÿ“ธ

We opened Natela Grigalashviliโ€™s exhibition โ€œEmbedded Practicesโ€ with an artist talk, where she took a deep dive into her ongoing projects โ€œThe Land of Doukhoborsโ€ and โ€œThe Final Days of Georgian Nomadsโ€. The exhibition will remain on view until May 17.

๐Ÿ“– We also hosted Alain C.J. de Lotbiniรจre who discussed the place of photography in contemporary art and the challenges of creating a photo book. The talk was accompanied by a presentation of his selected work.

๐ŸŽฅ Fotografia Gallery was happy to welcome KOLGA Photo Festival 2026 to our space with a book presentation and a screening by Andreas Otker-Kast, that brings together the work of 15 Georgian photographers who reflect on hope for an open future.

Fotografia expresses deep gratitude to each artist and audience member for being part of Fotografiaโ€™s community.

See you at the next event!

๐Ÿ“ธ Natela Grigalashviliโ€™s exhibition โ€˜Embedded Practicesโ€™ at Fotografia presents her two projects: โ€œThe Final Days of Georgian Nomadsโ€ and โ€œThe Doukhaborsโ€™ Landโ€.

Natelaโ€™s long-term engagement with rural life is built on proximity - on returning, observing, and staying with the same environments over time. Within this continuity, women emerge as constant figures, their presence shaping the rhythm and structure of daily life.

This selection of images follows them across different moments: working inside the home, laboring outside, participating in religious rituals, or simply spending time together. Their actions unfold without emphasis, yet carry a quiet weight. Much of what they do is repetitive, learned early, and continued almost instinctively.

Across generations, gestures echo one another. Younger women grow into roles already shaped before them, absorbing movements and responsibilities that rarely need to be explained. What might appear as routine reveals itself as something more layered, where habit, obligation, care, and ritual overlap without clear boundaries.
The photographs stay close to these moments, observing how daily life is sustained through small, persistent acts, and how presence is built not through singular events, but through continuity.

โ€˜Embedded Practicesโ€™ is co-curated by the Fotografia team and Myriam Grigalashvili.

Come see and purchase the prints at the Fotografia gallery and on our website (link in bio) ๐Ÿ“ธ

Join us for a special edition of Paraskevi with Alain C.J. de Lotbiniรจre on Thursday!

Alain will talk about the place of photography in contemporary art and the challenges of creating a photo book, sharing selected works along the way. Moving between image-making and image-thinking, he will reflect on how photographs shift meaning through sequencing, context, and form, and how a body of work gradually takes shape beyond the single frame. The conversation opens onto broader questions of narrative, authorship, and the role of the photographer today, leaving space for exploration, dialogue, and unexpected directions.

Date: Thursday, April 30th
Time: 6 PM
๐Ÿ“21 Revaz Tabukashvili St.

Alain C.J. de Lotbiniรจre () is a practicing neurosurgeon who lives in Connecticut, USA. The son of a Canadian diplomat, his early education was formed in several European countries: Holland, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, before returning to Canada to complete his medical training in the field of neurosurgery. Photography runs deep in the family, his father having given him his first camera on his fourteenth birthday. His GGG grandfather, Pierre Gustave Joly de Lotbiniรจre, acquired one of the first daguerreotype cameras from the Parisian optician, Noรซl Paymal Lerebours, and set off to the Middle East in 1839 to make photographic records of the ancient monuments in Greece, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, several of which were published in 1842 as lithographs in Excursions Daguerriennes. Articles about Alainโ€™s latest photographic work have appeared in the Boston Globe and the Black + White Photography magazine.

In conversation with Natela Grigalashvili at Fotografia

๐Ÿ“ธ Join us on Sunday for โ€˜Embedded Practicesโ€™: an artist talk and a personal exhibition opening of Natela Grigalashvili. In this talk, Natela reflects on her long-term work in rural communities and her focus on everyday life. Drawing from her own experience, she will speak about how working in familiar environments shapes the way she photographs, how trust develops over time, how relationships influence what can be captured, and why returning to the same places matters.
Rather than searching for extraordinary moments, Natela will discuss the importance of staying with what is already there, and how meaning gradually emerges through time and proximity.

The talk is moderated by Lizi Kutchukhidze. Embedded Practices is co-curated by Fotografia team and Myriam Grigalashvili.

Date: Sunday, April 26th
Time: 6 PM
๐Ÿ“21 Revaz Tabukashvili St

The talk will have a live English translation for non-Georgian speakers.
