Today in 1783.. Edmund Sexton Pery is unanimously re-elected as Speaker of the Irish Parliament. Considered one of the most powerful politicians in Ireland at the time, Pery’s Square in Limerick City was named in honour of him.

Limerick Museum is delighted to announce that due to popular demand our 'Specimens of Change' natural history exhibition has been extended until December 31st 2026.

This exhibition, curated by Dr Zara Power, Assistant Curator at Limerick Museum, invites the public to engage with our rarely seen natural history collections. Our collection is diverse and includes examples of palaeontology, zoology, oology, entomology, and botany in the form of an important herbarium amassed by the renowned Limerick botanist Charlotte O'Brien of Mount Trenchard, Foynes, Co. Limerick.

This exhibit is made possible thanks to funding from The Heritage Council

in 1859.. First Draft of the Resolutions Adopted at a meeting on Wed 12th Oct 1859, re "Restoration of St. Mary's Cathedral" Includes: John Long to be Hon Sec., and 460 pounds (approx. €70,000 today) gathered to be used for new roof.

Today in 1848.. A card was autographed by William Smith O'Brien and Terence Bellew MacManus, from inside Clonmel Jail, Tipperary, 11th October 1848. Both were later "transported" to Van Diemen's Land in Tasmania, Australia, in 1849.

"Shaping Time 3" an exhibition by Limerick Ceramic Artists and currated by Maurice Quillinan, will be running this month until the 29th of October here at Limerick Museum.

Limerick Ceramic Artists were founded in 2011, mainly by graduates of Limerick School of Art and Design. They are a network of ceramic practitioners living and working in the Mid-West region with members from Limerick City and County, Tipperary and Clare. In 2026 they are celebrating fifteen years since their first exhibition, starting with a major exhibition in the Limerick School of Art and Design in March, a second in the Draoicht Art Gallery in Adare and concluding with this exhibition in Limerick Museum in October. The title “Shaping Time” links these exhibitions together.

"The Opening of the New Floating Dock" and the "Turning of the First Sod" on the Foynes Railway Line, both carried out by the Lord Lieutenant, Richard Hobart Fitzgibbon, 3rd Earl of Clare, was reported in the Illustrated London News.
