"I don't claim in any way to be a good artist, but what I do claim is having had a great exciting and enjoyable journey with art.
I always think that if you like what you paint, and it gives you that warm, satisfied feeling of ‘gee, I painted that and it's not half bad’. You have accomplished something worthwhile.
Something that will spur you on to do another and another one. A frame in time, a moment
you have retained in your mind, a photograph you may have taken, or just something so
wacky you have created in your mind. To put any of those on to paper, cardboard, or canvas, can be such an exciting experience. As I said, if you like what you create, you have
accomplished something worthwhile, but if someone else likes what you have done, well I think that's a real bonus. The fact that you can transport someone else to a beautiful place
from your mind, like providing an instant window, it must be a wonderful thing, right."

We have what promises to be a fascinating lecture tomorrow night as part of Culture Night at the Yeats Building.

Why We Dream with Dr Kathy Ruddy

Dr Kathy Ruddy is a neuroscientist and Senior Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast, where she is Director of the Masters in Clinical Health Psychology. She is also the current President of Neuroscience Ireland, Ireland’s official neuroscience society.

Her research explores how the human brain functions, adapts and recovers, spanning topics including brain plasticity, movement, neurorehabilitation and sleep. She has published extensively in leading international scientific journals, including Nature Communications, with more than 35 peer-reviewed papers as well as book chapters to her name.

Kathy has presented her research around the world and, in December 2025, delivered a TEDx talk on the remarkable capacity of the human brain to change and recover.

She was named Irish Researcher of the Year in 2021 by the Irish Research Council and received the Firmus Energy Inspirational Woman of the Year in STEM award in 2022.

Through her research, teaching and leadership, Kathy is particularly passionate about making neuroscience accessible and showing how understanding the brain can help us understand and improve our everyday lives.
