Presenting our Artist of the Month: Tapan Mitra.
The Art of the Absent Self is a contemplative body of work that explores presence through absence, where identity is suggested, rather than seen.
In the works of Tapan Mitra, the self is never directly revealed. Instead, garments, objects, and fragments quietly take its place; a pair of jeans in an open field, a banian suspended in stillness, a solitary foot grounding a surreal landscape. These subtle substitutions create images that feel both intimate and distant, familiar yet unresolved.
Working in serigraphy, Mitra builds each composition with precision and restraint. His visual language is minimal yet evocative, shaped by repetition, silence, and a deep awareness of what is left unsaid.
Through this body of work, Mitra invites us to reconsider how identity is formed, not just through presence, but through what lingers in its absence.
