Erano pieghe di carta che attraversavano l'oceano.
Nella Sala 19 del Galata è possibile ascoltare le lettere di chiamata: missive originali mandate da emigrati ai familiari rimasti in Italia per invitarli a raggiungerli. Non erano lettere di addio. Erano lettere di connessione, il filo che teneva uniti chi era partito e chi era rimasto.
Le lettere descrivevano il nuovo paese, rassicuravano, a volte ingigantivano le possibilità. Chi scriveva cercava di non preoccupare, di dare coraggio. E così, da una lettera all'altra, l'emigrazione si propagava come un racconto che chiamava altri a diventarne protagonisti.
Alcune erano anche lettere di ritorno, non nel senso che tornavano indietro, ma nel senso che portavano a casa una voce, un segno che qualcuno stava bene e pensava a chi aveva lasciato.

They were folds of paper that crossed the ocean.
In Room 19 of the Galata you can listen to lettere di chiamata: original letters sent by emigrants to family members still in Italy, inviting them to follow. They were not farewell letters. They were letters of connection, the thread that kept together those who had left and those who had stayed.
The letters described the new country, offered reassurance, sometimes exaggerated the possibilities. Those who wrote tried not to worry, to give courage. And so, letter by letter, emigration spread like a story calling others to become part of it.
Some were also letters of return not in the sense that they went back, but in the sense that they brought home a voice, a sign that someone was well and thinking of those they had left.
