Looking back at a fantastic highlight from the Trieste Spring Run! 🌟

🦎 Not just bones. Skin preserved for over 250 million years.

An exceptional Barasaurus besairiei from the Upper Permian (Lopingian) of Madagascar, preserving something far less commonly encountered than the skeleton itself: evidence of the animal’s skin.

Discovered in the Lower Sakamena Formation near Ranohira, this small terrestrial reptile lived during the final chapter of the Permian, shortly before the greatest mass extinction in Earth’s history.

What makes this specimen particularly remarkable is the combination of skeletal remains and preserved skin impressions, offering a rare glimpse beyond the bones and into the external appearance of an animal that lived more than 250 million years ago.

The specimen is also preserved as a complete A+B pair — part and counterpart. Both matching slabs are present, recording the two opposing surfaces created when the fossil-bearing rock was split.
