🦴🐟 Bringing a Giant Predator Back to Light 🐟🦴

Our technicians are currently working on the delicate preparation of an extraordinary Xiphactinus skeleton preserved in slab — a massive predatory fish from the Late Cretaceous seas, measuring over 3 meters in length.

Often nicknamed the “bulldog fish,” Xiphactinus was one of the apex predators of the ancient oceans, equipped with huge jaws, sharp teeth, and the ability to swallow enormous prey whole. Some famous fossils even preserve their last meals still inside the body cavity.

Preparing a specimen of this scale is an extremely demanding process. Every millimeter of rock must be removed with precision to reveal fragile bones hidden for nearly 100 million years, while preserving the natural integrity of the fossil.

In our experience, we have also worked on a fully mounted 3D specimen of the same species — an exceptionally rare and complex undertaking. Mounting such fragile fossil bones in three dimensions requires deep anatomical study, structural planning, and countless hours of precision work to achieve both stability and scientific accuracy.

This is not just fossil preparation — it is a combination of science, craftsmanship, engineering, and patience.
Slowly, one of the great predators of the Cretaceous seas is emerging once again.

From fossil to relic: how the 15-meter Basilosaurus skeleton was transformed into contemporary art. Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren drew inspiration from ancient skeletal crowns (image 4) to construct this abstract sculpture. The bones are arranged in an altar-like composition - never before attempted with dinosaur remains. Steel coral branches extend from the crown, each holding spheres of fossilized coral.
