EN
The work of Henrike Naumann reflects on socio-political issues at the level of design and interior design, exploring the friction between opposing political opinions in relation to taste and personal everyday aesthetics. Naumann’s work probes the mechanisms of radicalization and their entanglement with personal experience.

“The space can be read like a text whose beginning we think we know and whose end we fear to read. Between the beginning and the end, we, in the present, are uncertain about our ability to influence the course of events. Yet we are the front line. Just as we can be sent to the front at any moment, the front is also dependent on us. What we want to fight for, or against. Whether we fight. Or radically love, let go, be vulnerable. Give up all hardness. Or fight out of love, twice as hard, hardcore.” (Henrike Naumann)

EN
Sung Tieu is a Berlin-based artist. Raised between political systems, her work unfolds at the intersection of biography and geopolitics. Working across sculpture, found objects, photography, archival material, drawing, and scent, Tieu examines how political, economic, and administrative systems inscribe themselves onto bodies, spaces, and forms of perception—addressing their historical formation and contemporary afterlives.

„Human Dignity Shall Be Inviolable“ envelops the façade of the German Pavilion in over three million mosaic tesserae, depicting the skeletal remains of a prefabricated socialist housing block on Gehrenseestrasse in East Berlin at a 1:1 scale—the artist’s former home and one of the largest housing complexes for foreign contract workers in the GDR, now slated for demolition. The inner wings of the pavilion are further presenting her work.

DE

"Ruin" is the title of this year’s German Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia, about to open on May 9. In "Ruin", the pavilion becomes a space in which physical and social structures, German ideologies, and lived biographies tangibly overlap, bringing architecture, history, and psychology into productive tension. The exhibition's title riffs on the word’s multiple associations. While the English word "ruin" refers to architectural and physical remnants, the German term "Ruin" signifies a state of collapse—economic, social, or moral.

The German Pavilion at this year’s La Biennale di Venezia is curated by Kathleen Reinhardt and will present works by Henrike Naumann and Sung Tieu. ln newly produced works, the artists draw on their research into the GDR (German Democratic Republic) and the transition period following reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, demonstrating how historical ruptures and gaps in political, social, and architectural structures continue to resonate—and are perhaps more evident than ever in a globalized present. Tieu and Naumann reflect on both German history and the German Pavilion’s fascist architecture by artistically reappropriating the space. Using a formal vocabulary that oscillates between minimalist clarity and maximalist opulence, both artists employ the building as an ambivalent mirror of social dynamics from the recent past to the present.
