"I love this artwork because I find it so dreamlike. It makes me think of memories: new memories that weave themselves into old ones, beautiful memories that replace the bad ones, and everything slowly twisting and blending together, fading into one another.

I also really enjoy taking groups past this artwork. The story behind it is fascinating, and everyone has their own interpretations which I love to hear. It's definitely one of my favorites!" says Robbin, tour guide at the Stedelijk.

"Ik vind dit kunstwerk prachtig omdat het zo dromerig is. Het doet me denken aan herinneringen: nieuwe herinneringen die zich met oude verweven, mooie herinneringen die de slechte vervangen, en hoe alles langzaam in elkaar overvloeit en versmelt tot één geheel.

Ik vind het ook heel leuk om groepen langs dit kunstwerk te leiden. Het verhaal erachter is fascinerend, en iedereen heeft zijn eigen interpretaties, die ik graag hoor. Het is absoluut een van mijn favorieten!", zegt Robbin, rondleider bij het Stedelijk.

Neo Matloga depicts everyday life in black households in his native South Africa. Most of his collages are on the same scale as 19th-century historical paintings. In his Black collages, the figures are shown separately against a plain white background. Looking directly at the viewer, their bodies are shown in unusual proportions.

The title ‘m’gongone’ alludes to being at a party. By bringing these figures together, Matloga makes us wonder: what connects them and what keeps them apart?

Neo Matloga beeldt het dagelijks leven in zwarte huishoudens in zijn geboorteland Zuid-Afrika af. De meeste van zijn collages hebben dezelfde schaal als negentiende eeuwse historische schilderijen. In zijn ‘Black collages' worden de figuren afzonderlijk afgebeeld tegen een effen witte achtergrond. Ze kijken de toeschouwer recht aan en hun lichamen worden in ongebruikelijke verhoudingen weergegeven.

De titel ‘m’gongone’ verwijst naar op een feestje zijn. Door deze figuren bij elkaar te brengen, zet Matloga ons aan het denken: wat verbindt hen en wat houdt hen gescheiden?

How beautiful are the colors in this artwork by Marc Chagall? 😍 Known for his vibrant shades, supernatural depictions, and universal themes such as love, hope, and human connection, Chagall created a universe that feels both familiar and otherworldly.

In our series, we highlight works that are currently not on view. Did you know the Stedelijk collection holds over 40 works by Chagall? Only one is currently on view, but not for long… A dedicated exhibition is coming in 2027!

Hoe geweldig zijn de kleuren in dit werk van Marc Chagall? 😍 Chagall staat bekend om zijn levendige kleuren, dromerige beelden en universele thema’s als liefde, hoop en menselijke verbondenheid. Hiermee creëerde hij een wereld die tegelijkertijd vertrouwd en buitenaards aanvoelt.

In onze serie zetten we werken in de spotlight die momenteel niet in het museum te zien zijn. Wist je dat het Stedelijk meer dan 40 werken van Chagall in de collectie heeft? Op dit moment is er slechts één te zien, maar niet voor lang… In 2027 komt er een speciale tentoonstelling over zijn werk. ✨

Museumplein is becoming part of Yayoi Kusama’s unmistakable universe.

The upcoming retrospective exhibition is a posthumous tribute celebrating the life and work of the artist. The entire façade of the Stedelijk is now covered in multicoloured polka dots. The dot has been at the heart of Kusama’s work for more than seventy years, repeated across paintings, sculptures and entire installations until individual forms seem to dissolve into endless patterns. ❤️

Museumplein wordt onderdeel van Yayoi Kusama’s onmiskenbare universum.

Met het recent overlijden van Yayoi Kusama is de aankomende overzichtstentoonstelling een postuum eerbetoon geworden, waarin het leven en werk van de kunstenaar worden gevierd. De volledige gevel van het Stedelijk is inmiddels bedekt met kleurrijke polkadots. De stip staat al meer dan zeventig jaar centraal in Kusama’s werk en keert eindeloos terug in schilderijen, sculpturen en complete installaties, waardoor vormen en grenzen steeds meer vervagen. ❤️

Het is bijna zover, open vanaf 11 september.

Which one of these Kho Liang Ie chairs is your favorite? 🪑

Within a few years of completing his studies in interior architecture in 1954, Kho Liang Ie was already inundated with commissions from industrial companies. Most were initially for furniture, for clients like CAR, but these were complemented in the 1960s by commissions for a kitchen and tiles. This room presents Kho’s designs for three of these companies: C.A. Ruigrok Industrie (CAR), Bruynzeel, and Royal Mosa.

Welke van deze Kho Liang Ie stoelen is jouw favoriet? 🪑

Binnen enkele jaren na het afronden van zijn studie interieurarchitectuur in 1954 werd Kho Liang Ie al overspoeld met opdrachten van industriële bedrijven. De meeste opdrachten hadden aanvankelijk betrekking op meubilair, voor klanten zoals CAR, maar in de jaren zestig kwamen daar opdrachten voor een keuken en tegels bij. In deze zaal worden Kho’s ontwerpen voor drie van deze bedrijven getoond: C.A. Ruigrok Industrie (CAR), Bruynzeel en Royal Mosa.

De tentoonstelling ‘Kho Liang Ie — Mid-Century Modernist’ is te zien tot en met 18 oktober.

Blending the boundaries between art, craft, and architecture, Sheila Hicks is a long-time pioneer in the field of Fibre Art. She spent much of her early life on the road, which greatly influenced her career as an artist. She draws inspiration from weaving traditions worldwide, creating works that range from intimate handwoven pieces to large-scale installations like this one.

Hicks has long been part of the Stedelijk's collection. Swipe to the last photo to see 'Vague Verte' already being on view in the museum in 1974 👀

Sheila Hicks, die de grenzen tussen kunst, ambacht en architectuur doet vervagen, is al jarenlang een pionier op het gebied van textielkunst. Ze bracht een groot deel van haar jeugd door op reis, wat haar carrière als kunstenaar sterk heeft beïnvloed. Ze haalt inspiratie uit weeftradities over de hele wereld en creëert werken die variëren van intieme, handgeweven stukken tot grootschalige installaties zoals deze.

Hicks maakt al geruime tijd deel uit van de collectie van het Stedelijk. Kijk maar eens naar de laatste foto, waarop te zien is dat ‘Vague Verte’ al in 1974 in het museum te bewonderen was 👀

It is with great sadness that the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has learned of the passing of Yayoi Kusama.

Over a career spanning more than seventy years, Kusama became one of the most influential artists of her time. Her polka dots, pumpkins and mirrored environments became iconic elements of a highly distinctive visual language. In her work, the boundaries between the individual, their surroundings and infinity seem to dissolve. This is where the particular power of her work lies: in the sense of being part of something larger and connected to the world around us.

Through her work, Kusama transcended generations, cultures and national borders, touching people around the world. With the utmost respect, the upcoming retrospective exhibition has now become a posthumous tribute celebrating Kusama’s life and work. Her influence on art will endure.

Our thoughts are with her loved ones, her studio and all those who were close to her.

Met groot verdriet heeft het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam kennisgenomen van het overlijden van Yayoi Kusama.

In een carrière van meer dan zeventig jaar groeide Kusama uit tot een van de invloedrijkste kunstenaars van haar tijd. Haar polkadots, pompoenen en spiegelruimtes werden iconische elementen in een volstrekt eigen beeldtaal. In haar werk vervagen de grenzen tussen individu, omgeving en oneindigheid. Juist daarin schuilt een bijzondere kracht: het gevoel onderdeel te zijn van iets groters, en van verbondenheid met de wereld om ons heen.

Kusama wist met haar werk generaties, culturen en landsgrenzen te overstijgen en mensen over de hele wereld te raken. Met veel respect is haar aankomende overzichtstentoonstelling een postuum eerbetoon geworden, waarin we het leven en werk van Kusama vieren. Haar invloed op de kunst is blijvend.

Onze gedachten gaan uit naar haar naasten, haar studio en iedereen die nauw met haar verbonden was.
