🟢 Spotlight
Now on display! We are proud to present the work of skips in our latest Spotlight. 🔥
Skips is a Rotterdam-based painter, musician, photographer, s*x worker, and q***r trans man interested in the creation of “theory you can f**k.”
Born in San Francisco, skips’ self-taught visual art practice began on the streets as a teenage delinquent in the graffiti scene. Having taught themselves to produce music with a cheap copy of Logic Pro 6 at the age of 13, skips went on to receive a BFA in Recorded Music from NYU, graduating at the age of 20 with honors. Throughout their 20s, skips toured the world as a DJ and musician. In 2021, they retired from music to begin their gender transition in private, eventually returning to music as an honest but far less “socially acceptable” version of themselves. The photography book “i want to rest and be held by someone who loves me” was a eulogy for the first 30 years of their life, memorializing the many acts of self-destruction required to live inauthentically. No matter what form this creativity takes, skips knows that liberation requires coloring outside the lines.
“
The paintings of skips are rooted in real, human experience. Using their own body as a grounding device, skips paints n**e self-portraits in positions of vulnerability, s*xual expression, and/or power. Sometimes existing in a defined space, sometimes living in abstract on spray paint backgrounds and illustrative objects. Occasionally the bodies painted are not their own, but generic forms that suggest cis experience, or representations of parts of self. Skips uses a combination of techniques picked up during their street art days, blended with self-taught traditional techniques to make figurative works. In this new body of work, these serve as the backdrop for stenciled texts with bites of practical perspective.
