Mensans Explore Comics, Creativity, and Community at Araw ng Libreng Komiks

QUEZON CITY -- A few of our Mensa Philippines members gathered for a lively day of community and pop culture this May 2, 2026 at Robinsons Galleria.

We were there for Araw ng Libreng Komiks, also known as Free Comic Book Day. It's an annual celebration of comics that brings together creators, fans, and collectors in one space.

Just line up, take your pick of any two free comics from a tempting selection, and enjoy the other activities throughout the day.

Spotted amidst the crowds were Mensans Dimpy Jazmines, Lex De La Torre, and Ted Chua. Together, the group spent the day immersed in the event's festive atmosphere.

Also present as a guest creator and exhibitor was fellow Mensan Lyndon Gregorio, the celebrated creator of the long-running Beerkada Comics comic strip and Mapakulay artistic maps.

While navigating the venue, our members also took the time to support and interact with the various comic creators and artists at their booths, gaining unique insights into the exciting projects they are currently working on.

Adding to the fun, they caught up with fellow comic fans and took photos with the many creative cosplayers who brought comic characters to life.

Taking advantage of Comic Odyssey's discounts, they also hunted for hard-to-find hauls and hidden gems, spending several hours sifting through stacks and back-issue bins.

For our members who were part of this event, it was a memorable day of bonding, defined by shared curiosity, pop culture exploration, celebration of creativity, and the strong sense of connection that defines our local comic book community.

Just Some Mensans With Board Games Hanging Out

Members of SIGMA, the Special Interest Group for Mental Athletes of Mensa Philippines, recently brought their love for board games and puzzles into a more personal setting through a house call hosted by fellow Mensa Philippines member GB Bunag.

They came lugging a curated mix of card games, board games, and puzzles, and spent the day playing, chatting, satisfying food cravings, and simply enjoying the fun of hanging out. It may look like a simple game day, but it's full of what brings Mensans together: curiosity, challenge, and connection.

It’s also proof that Mensans can have a fun gathering just about anywhere, even at someone's house.

To those active in SIGMA, the SIG has always been more than just playing games. It’s a space where members can think, try new strategies, and connect with others in a relaxed way. Activities like this show that learning and thinking don’t always have to feel formal.

The playful day was also reminder that it’s these shared moments that help Mensa build a stronger community.

What's next for these gamers? They're setting their sights on All aBOARD Expo 2026, one of the biggest board game gatherings in the region. Led by Gaming Library, this is happening from May 28 to 31 at the Quezon City M.I.C.E. Center. Maybe you'll bump into some of the SIGMAs there.

As SIGMA continues to grow along with Mensa, activities like this make it easier for members to discover everyone's favorite games, exchange recommendations, and connect in more personal ways.

POST-MENSA IQ CHALLENGE THOUGHTS: Why It’s Okay If It Wasn’t Your Day

So you just took the Mensa IQ Challenge at UP Diliman. You should be getting your test results over the next few days.

Like any test, there will be passers and there will be those who will not make the cut this time around.

We understand that while it can be a bit of a letdown not to receive the hoped-for outcome, the experience can still be seen for what it was -- just an afternoon spent solving puzzles.

Not just in a Mensa test, if you found yourself overthinking or feeling the pressure of the clock, remember that those moments are just part of the ride.

Sometimes, especially among big brain types, it is normal for our minds to look for extra layers of meaning in things. While that can make a timed test feel tricky, it is the same trait that helps you think deeply in daily life.

FUN FACT: Did you know that even within Mensa, there are members who did not pass on their first try?

They felt that same disappointment, waited their turn, and came back to try again. Like any other challenge in life, it is not the result of one day that defines us, but what we do afterward.

The good news is the journey does not end here if you don't want it to. Under Mensa Philippines rules, anyone can retake the test after a six-month wait (just enough time for test takers to forget the exact test they took), and there is no limit to how many times you can try.

If you decide to do it, to improve your chances next time, try practicing abstract reasoning puzzles online to get used to the format. To avoid overthinking, focus on the simplest answer first and move quickly through the grid.

For now, we want to say that we admire you for stepping up. Rest your mind and follow Mensa Philippines on social media for the next schedule.

When you're ready, see you in our next tests!

Mensa Philippines Holds Mensa IQ Challenge at UP Diliman

QUEZON CITY -- Mensa Philippines successfully held the Mensa IQ Challenge today, April 25, 2026, at the Cesar E.A. Virata School of Business, UP Diliman.

It was a long and productive day of conducting testing sessions hourly from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and we were able to accommodate a steady stream of pre-registered candidates and walk-ins.

Before each session, Deputy Testing Director Mel Balilio briefed participants on the history of Mensa, the local activities of Mensa Philippines, our Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and key organizational plans moving forward.

Mel proctored the exams with assistance from Ted Chua and Kristi Sarmiento, while Charlene Tan managed the registration desk.

Other volunteers also joined, and our helpers ensured operations remained efficient and collaborative throughout the day. Following the final session, Testing Director Dr. Jessy Gutierrez led the checking process for all test papers.

The camaraderie extended beyond the testing room. During the breaks, members took the opportunity to bond over snacks, conversations, and card games.

After the event, members invited each other to catch a screening of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, while others headed to fellow member Ramon Lorenzo’s Quiz Night at Manhattan Bar in Quezon City later this evening.

Once our final validation is complete, official emails will be sent to all test-takers to inform them of their results, and we will soon be able to welcome some new Mensans.

Thank you to all our volunteers and to everyone who stepped up to take the challenge.

ART, HISTORY, AND HERITAGE: MAGC SIG and Mensa Kids Explore the National Museum

Last Sunday, April 19, 2026, Mensa Philippines members gathered for an enriching cultural excursion at the National Museum of Fine Arts.

The event was a wonderful collaborative activity that brought together two of our vibrant communities: the newly established Museum and Gallery Crawlers Special Interest Group (MAGC SIG), and the Mensa Kids and their parents.

Our members were reacquainted with some of the country’s most revered national cultural treasures, standing face-to-face with masterpieces like Juan Luna's iconic Spoliarium (1884) and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo's dramatic El As*****to del Gobernador Bustamante (1904).

Adding depth to the visual experience, Mensa member Joel Aldor treated the group to an insightful mini-lecture. He guided participants through the evolution of Philippine religious art, the distinct elegance of Art Deco, and the rise of modernism in pre-war Philippine society during the 1920s.

While the adults immersed themselves in art history, the Mensa Kids were treated to a fun, playful, and interactive experience at the special children's exhibit curated by CANVAS (Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development), located on the museum's fourth floor.

To cap off a morning of art and history, the group headed to Binondo to share stories and a sumptuous fellowship lunch at the President Grand Palace Restaurant.

What's Next?
The MAGC SIG is thrilled to announce that we will be organizing monthly visits to various museums and galleries across Metro Manila and beyond. Our next activity is slated for May in special celebration of National Heritage Month.

We warmly invite all Mensa members and their friends to join us for our upcoming adventures! For more information and the latest updates, make sure to follow the Mensa Philippines social accounts.

A Day of Games, Giggles, and Growth for Mensa Kids

Our Mensa Kids and their parents came together recently for a full day of play, bonding, and shared experiences.

The “Anything Goes” Play Date was held at Lincolnshire International School, and it created a warm space for both children and parents to connect.

The program mixed outdoor and indoor activities to keep the children engaged and active.

The kids enjoyed free play at the playground, including swings, slides, and monkey bars. They also joined an egg hunt and enjoyed simple food stations like s’mores and hotdogs.

Parents supported the experience through potluck sharing, making the environment more relaxed and community-driven.

After outdoor play, the group moved indoors for board games and music activities.

Games like chess helped the kids practice focus and thinking skills, while music bonding encouraged creativity and interaction. These activities allowed the young Mensans to enjoy both structured and unstructured play in a balanced way.

Meals were shared in a potluck style, with families also ordering food together.

In the afternoon, the kids watched a movie together. This helped them slow down after an active morning and gave them time to rest and recharge.

The play date was well organized, balanced, and enjoyable for all participants. It was led by Mensa Kids and Teens Coordinator Rachel Del Mundo Racraquin, whose effort and coordination made the event possible.

More than that, it strengthened connections among the families, gave the kids meaningful social interaction, and created a safe and joyful space for everyone to learn through bonding and play.
