Ssempijja is a Ugandan contemporary artist, choreographer, and researcher working across dance, performance, film, installation, objects and material practices. His work has developed from a background in movement and choreography towards an expanded practice that also considers objects, images, architecture and cultural materials. Since 2024, he has been a member of the Sweden Based Collective at the International Contemporary Dance Collective (iCoDaCo), a project dedicated to collective authorship and international knowledge transfer, coordinated by ilDance.

In What Happens When I Try to Remember, Ssempijja shares works and processes from his practice and introduces The Ugandan Pathology, an ongoing framework through which he looks at Uganda’s past and its contemporary realities, and how they can be approached through artistic research and making.

The session begins with a 30–45-minute movement workshop, followed by an hour-long talk, including Q&A and discussion.

Through selected works, images and material experiments, he reflects on what happens when remembering becomes part of the artistic process. How can an object, image, or material hold something difficult to articulate? What can making reveal that research alone cannot?

The talk moves between movement, material, objects, and research, offering insight into how Ssempijja develops works from encounters with memory, cultural objects, archives, and the spaces around him. Ssempijja also includes impressions and references from his work in iCoDaCo with 10 artist collectives across Europe, particularly focusing on political bodies and how that links to his own practice.

Open Call: Work-in-Progress Sharing and Artist Talk

We invite Stockholm-based artists with curiosities about multidisciplinary approach, whether simple or complex, to performative and performance art to share their work-in-progress at the third ilDance Event.

⏳Open Call deadline: 18 October 2026
📅ilDance Event: 22 November 2026, 15:00-21:00, CCAP, Stockholm

We are looking for one work-in-progress, at any stage of the process, with multidisciplinary approach and distinct relation with/to the huWOman* body. We are particularly interested in work across materials and mediums with visual, plastic, video, digital, non-human, more-than-human, post-human, and trans dimensions.

The work-in-progress sharing will take place in the small studio at CCAP, a 4 × 4 m black box with no windows (complete darkness is possible). The work-in-progress should require simple technical setup and can be presented within a set timeframe (approx 20 min) or set up as a durational installation/exhibition which spectators/audience can visit at different moments throughout the Event.

More information and how to apply: www.ildance.se/news

*huWOman is a term coined by Israel Aloni to challenge the passive acceptance of “human” as an inherently inclusive category, given that this unexamined acceptance often carves discrimination into our societies. HuWOman serves as a constant reminder of who is not automatically protected by the “human” category.

My Many Bodies - Workshop with Israel Aloni

Aloni’s practice, The I.Aloni Experience, argues that we do not have a body, but rather an experience of body. Erin Manning talks about bodying, referring to how a body is always in process, always becoming. The concept of double consciousness; experiencing a multiplicity, has been addressed by thinkers and philosophers such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Frantz Fanon. In psychoanalysis, Lacan argued that a split always precedes subject formation and, in some sense, that very split is the experience of subjectivity.

In this workshop, they will explore movement and dancing with attentiveness to both multiplicity (bodies) and the ongoingness of the process of embodiment (bodying). What movement and dancing can emerge when explored with multiple bodies? How can the multiplicity of the ‘individual’ body interact with that of the collective body? How do the experience of bodying and that of movement stimulate one another?

The workshop is suitable for people with an interest and experience in movement, dancing, and the choreographic. People of all ages (18+), genders, backgrounds, and movement or dance practices are encouraged to participate.

When: Thursday, 15 October 2026 at 18:00 - 21:00 (3 hours)
Where: CCAP (Körsbärsvägen 9 nb, 114 23 Stockholm)

Next performance in Atalante, Gothenburg: A Moment of Endlessness, 4–5 December 2026

A Moment of Endlessness emerged from a research process at archaeological sites in Serbia, Spain, Italy, and Greece where choreographer Israel Aloni observed how stories attached to places do more than revive the past: they blur the boundaries between different temporalities, bringing past and present into dialogue.

The work reflects on time as both concept and lived experience, exploring how stories gain meaning through the contexts in which they are told and retold. Texts by Hayim Nahman Bialik and Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) accompany the audience on a journey through moments, images, and sensations that move between the personal and the collective, the intimate and the universal.

A Moment of Endlessness was initially performed within the Dancing Histor(y)ies project, a European collaboration exploring the encounters between contemporary dance and archaeological heritage sites.
