A hotel room might not be the most obvious place to paint. Gunilla Backelin disagrees.

For years, she has brought paintings with her when staying at a hotel in southern Sweden. Some she has painted there, others she has hung on the walls or placed around the room, just to see them somewhere new.

One day, the cleaning staff walked in while she was in the middle of painting. Instead of wondering what on earth she was doing, they asked if they could buy one.

Gunilla lives and works in Stockholm, and her paintings tend to move around with her. Her paintings are abstract, but they have a way of making you look for things. A figure, a landscape, something you almost recognise. Look again and it might be something else.

This autumn, we’re very happy to welcome Gunilla Backelin to UMA Gallery.

On June 13, we open our summer exhibition Intrepid featuring new, figurative works by Andreas Dienert. Intrepid means fearless, bold, and willing to step into the unknown without hesitation.

Intrepid is about moving through the world without fear even when it feels strange, unpredictable, and at times absurd.

“For me, these characters embody that mindset. Follow them as they move through it all: unafraid, independent, and committed to their own path. Fear should not be what guides us,” says Andreas Dienert.

Warmly welcome on Saturday, June 13, between 12 and 6 pm.

Fascinerande, originellt och suggestivt.
18 april öppnar vi en soloutställning med helt nya verk av Malmöbaserade Mattias Sammekull.🌟

Sammekull har studerat för den norske målaren Odd Nerdrum och bland annat ställt ut på Venedigbiennalen, MAMA i New York och Kitschbiennalen i München. Han räknas till en av Sveriges mest säregna figurativa målare.

Soloutställningen öppnar 18 april kl 17–20. Pågår till den 3 maj.🖤
