On Friday August 21, 2026, the volunteer's from Dr. Bob's Home, were treated to an evening of baseball, food, fellowship and fireworks. Become part of the volunteer program at Dr. Bob’s Home, a National Historic Landmark. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of Anne and Dr. R. H. Smith’s family home. We have very flexible schedules that are based on your availability. Some people volunteer one day a month, while others are here several times a week. We provide training on our history, home tours, and gift shop. You will also be part of Founders’ Day, Gratitude Sunday, Christmas party, summer picnic and more…

In God's Good Time by Kay S., C.P.F.F.
Yes, miracles do happen, but always, "in God's good time"! For twenty years I had a dream. I remembered being so new in our Fellowship, driving by 855 Ardmore Ave., Akron, Ohio; stopping the car and praying a silent prayer of gratitude for my life and my new found friends. Knowing "here's where it all began", the home of our CoFounder, Dr. Bob. I could visualize, so clearly, Dr. Bob and Bill sitting on the front porch talking. I imagined them probably saying, "Isn't it great to be sober?" "Let's go find a new one and tell him he doesn't have to drink anymore". "He doesn't have to die". Perhaps they put their arm around the other's shoulder as they walked down the "12 steps" to the street. Yes, there are 12 steps. (A miracle? A coincidence?) I wanted, so desperately, to help preserve this stately old home. Dr. Bob and Annie were now gone. This peaceful home, sold to strangers, was now fast deteriorating; the paint peeling, gutter spouts sagging, roof leaking. But who cares? Down with the old. I care, my heart cried. My new friends care too, but I was gently reminded "our Fellowship can't own property" (Tradition Six). Our hands are tied and we feel sad about this, too. But there must be a way! I would always take guests, that were from out of town, to see this wonderful place. Relating the history and seeing them scramble out of the car with camera's clicking (looking around to see that no one was watching) very quickly hop on the steps and get a picture they could show the people back home. Our trip would proceed on to the Mayflower Hotel, St. Thomas Hospital, Kistler's Donut Shop, the Gate House, T. Henry Williams Home, King School, and then to Mt. Peace Cemetery to visit, with prayer and meditation, the grave of our Dr. Bob and his good wife, Annie. Silence, and then, "why don't the people of Akron preserve this home?" "It's our heritage." "Yes, yes, we'll help you. Let's start a foundation." "It won't be breaking our Traditions." "All in God's Good Time," I'd say. Our "50th" year as a Fellowship, our dream is now a reality. Thank you! The Founders Foundation has been created and our primary purpose is to purchase, renovate, furnish as original, and maintain the home of our Co-Founder, Dr. Bob Smith. The home shall belong to present and future members everywhere (we plan an archives and facilities for visitors). June 14, 15, 16, 1985 Founder's Day will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Fellowship. Stop by and have a cup of coffee with us. Yes, you can take all the pictures you want! The house is yours. The Akron City Club & Dr. Bob
Located next door to Dr. Bob's medical office at 157 South Main Street, the Akron City Club was one of downtown Akron's premier private clubs for physicians, attorneys, business leaders, and civic officials. Housed in the historic Ohio Building, it offered fine dining, recreation, and fellowship for its members.

During his years of sobriety, Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith made it a regular practice to spend Monday afternoons playing bridge at the City Club. His routine was so well known that when someone urgently needed his help, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob's son, Smitty, knew exactly where to find him—at the City Club. Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers recounts this memorable story, offering a glimpse into Dr. Bob's balanced life of service, friendship, and healthy recreation.

Today, the Akron City Club is gone, but its place in the story of Alcoholics Anonymous lives on as another landmark in the daily life of one of A.A.'s co-founders.

This post is from a local Akron citizen, who visited the home for the first time...... Aug. 2026

Many may not know that Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Akron, Ohio… and that you can tour Dr Bob's Home, and the gift shop, every day from Noon – 3 p.m. seven days a week. (except Christmas).

Visiting the home of one of the founding fathers is FREE, but there are donation boxes if you want to show your support of this symbol of continued hope for millions of people! (As you can see in the last photo, you can also visit the nearby gravesite of Dr. Bob!)
