Alameda Museum We provide displays of Alameda's illustrious history, from the native Ohlone through Neptune Beach,

The Alameda Historical Society was founded in 1948, and the Museum was established in 1951. In 1983 the Alameda Museum was designated as the official repository of historical documents and artifacts for the City of Alameda.

Dennis will relate the history of the police department here and share the plans for the department’s headquarters at City Hall. He will also let you in on exactly how you can see what’s left from the “prison” where local ne’er-do-wells did their time.

Maps Tell the Stories:
South Shore, Gold Coast, and Ballena Bay

Dennis will use one of the museum’s large aerial maps to explain how the South Shore developed in the 20th century. He will show how the 19th-century baths disappeared one-by-one and tell the story how an amusement park’s name morphed into the moniker of one of Alameda’s swankiest neighborhoods.

Britt’s and Bird’s: Early West End Hotels

Dennis will talk about two of Alameda’s earliest hotels: Britt’s that later became Croll’s and the Bird Hotel in Woodstock. Meet the families who built and ran these establishments and the roles they played in the unfolding of the beaches and railroad here. Dennis will also touch on a pair of hotels built by the railroads and another whose building still stands.
