What does winter look like when you take Christmas out of it?
That idea helped inspire Winterberry, our new 4x4 art tile designed by Motawi bulb glazer Anissa Keeler.
Anissa wanted to create something that belonged to the whole season. She found it in winterberry (Ilex verticillata), a native deciduous holly whose leaves fall away while clusters of vivid red berries remain.
Red berries. Bare branches. Winter distilled to a few essential lines and colors.
Winterberry was selected through Motawi’s Second Studio design competition, giving Anissa the chance to move from glazing other artists’ designs to creating one of her own. As she says, “You’re designing art, but you’re designing art that is a tile.”
And now it is—handcrafted in Ann Arbor, one tile at a time.
