Here’s another example of a colorful pattern piece we made made from a fused Bullseye glass tile blown into a bowl using the Australian Rollup technique. The technique was developed by glass artists Klaus Moje, Dante Mariani and Scott Chaseling exploring ways to make vessels without a furnace. Moje and Mariani experimented with the idea at Bullseye in Portland, Oregon in 1993. They worked with fused tiles formed around a furnace glass bubble. Then in Australia in 1995, Moje worked with Chaseling to adapt the Venetian cane rollup technique to pick up fused glass tiles with a collar of Bullseye glass on the end of a blow tube. Thus the name Australian Rollup.

if you’ve been following along recently, you know I’ve been making Bullseye glass tiles to be used in the Australian Rollup process to make vessels, bottles, vases, plates, etc. Last Thursday rolled up this cross hatch vase. It’s a great example of what can be done in this method. More to come! If you’d like to learn how to do this join our class 3 day class starting May 27 .

Is it a pattern bar? Is it a flat fused bullseye glass tile? Will it be a 3D vase? Yes, yes and yes. Just in the kiln today, the striped pattern bar squares will fuse together with strips of sheet glass into a 1.2cm thick tile. That flat tile will be brought into the hot shop, rolled up on a blow tube, carefully sealed at the edges and blown into a vase. The process is called “Australian Rollup” and I’ll be teaching a class with hot shop glass guru extraordinaire at . Join us in the fused glass studio and hot shop to learn this unique hybrid creative process.

Pattern bar tile just out of the kiln today at Bay Area Glass Institute. Photo 1 is the kiln set up. Photos 2 and 3 are the more organic top side and geometric kiln shelf side of the tile, respectively. This will be one of the pattern bar class projects. And it’s just one of the set up options.

I’ll be teaching a fused glass pattern bar class at in San Jose this May. I’ve been working on process and samples. So many ways to use these cool designs alone or as elements in plates, vessels and more.

Curvy. Another fine line piece by . From the .leatherbarrow class at . Edges worked organically, surface sandblasted and slumped to form the finished plate to be hung in my wall. This one creates the curves using vitrograph canes. Again creating lines from the reaction between the metals in the canes and flat sheet glass. I 💙 chemistry!
