The Lewis and Clark expedition reached the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers (modern-day Pasco, Washington) on October 16, 1805.

The Corps of Discovery camped there for two days, documented large native fisheries, and were greeted by local tribes with a ceremonial song and drum performance.

There are exactly four navigation locks on the lower Snake River, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They are part of a 465-mile inland waterway stretching from the Pacific Ocean to Lewiston, Idaho, which is heavily used to barge grain and commercial goods.

American Cruise Lines retraces the steps of Lewis and Clark through this area from Lewiston to Portland.
