Today marks 99th anniversary of the day that was supposed to destroy our community, May 18, 1927. Instead of destroying our community so long ago, people came together to rebuild the school and the simple lives they lived. Over the past couple weeks several news outlets have reached out to the museum committee to share our story. We are thankful you all feel this story is worth sharing and continue to help us do so. See comments for more stories.

Some experts believe that Andrew Kehoe, furious over rising taxes and losing a township clerk election, carried out the massacre as an act of revenge meant to kill as many people as possible.

Recently members of the museum committee were interviewed about the disaster by Sophia Saliby, the host of All Things Considered for WKAR. WKAR has done several stories about the museum over the past couple years, some of which are linked in the attached interview. The interview will air on Monday morning during the broadcast of Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Thank you WKAR for continuing to help us share our story.

We took some photos of our beautiful park and all of the great memorials yesterday to share with a recent interviewer. One of my favorite stories about the disaster is that survivors on that tragic day all had memories of how they could smell lilacs in the air. A few years ago the museum committee cleaned up an existing flower bed with 1 lilac bush and we added several more. Next time you visit the park walk over to the north side of the park and check out the lilac bushes which are starting to bloom.

Bath Township is funding a public art project to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the Bath School Disaster and needs members for the art committee. This is a great opportunity to be a part of lasting community project. Please share with anyone who might be interested. Being a township resident is not required.

In March, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of an ad-hoc committee, the Centennial Art Committee, tasked with the planning, selection, and installation of works of art to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bath School Bombing. The Committee will begin meeting in May. Anyone with an interest in public art, local history, or community engagement is encouraged to apply. Applicants are not required to be Bath Township residents.

Those interested in applying may do so using the Google Form: https://forms.gle/cFFQmW8okyYN6Qof8

Applications can also be obtained from the Township Offices or on the Township website: https://bathtownship.us/government/boards-commissions-committees.php
