moment | Month

Before black travelers could freely travel, they relied on The Negro Motorist Green Book, created by Victor Hugo Green. This guide lists safe hotels, restaurants, and businesses for Black motorists during segregation. During this time, cars meant mobility, but the Green Book made that mobility possible, providing freedom and protection on the road.

This showcases both a Civil Rights leader with Lansing roots and his connection to the Lansing-based REO.

In 1927, then two-year-old Malcolm Little moved with his family from Nebraska to Lansing, Michigan. He lived in Lansing until 1940. Between 1941 and 1945, he moved between Lansing and the East Coast. Returning to Lansing, Malcolm Little takes on multiple jobs, including working as a janitor at REO in 1945.

More on REO and Malcolm X can be found here: https://malcolmxinlansing.leadr.site/items/show/21

By the late 1940s, Malcolm Little began to enter the social justice movement, joining the Nation of Islam and changing his name to Malcolm X in 1952.

For today's and spotlight, we will look at a Lansing trailblazer in the Civil Rights movement, Rudolph Wilson. In 1955, Rudolph “Rudy” Wilson was the first Black chemist and salaried employee hired by Oldsmobile. He negotiated over the years to ensure that the company followed equitable hiring practices. He retired in 1987. Wilson served as branch president of the local NAACP from 1977 to 1986. He was appointed in 1987 to serve on the Ingham Intermediate School District board. He died in 2015.

Your winter escape is closer than you think. Step into the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum and explore the numerous exhibits that highlight Ransom E. Olds contributions to America's automotive culture. This includes how Lansing's automotive industries and workers strove to support America's war effort during World War II. You still have time to explore our temporary exhibit "Labor, Patriotism, and Marketing," which curates the diverse voices of industry, government, and workers as they all strove to defeat the Axis Powers. While you explore the exhibit take part in the exhibit activity by sharing your thoughts and adding your own poster art to the gallery!
