Before algorithms told people what to wear, before “alternative” became a marketing term, there were the old headshops. The weird little sanctuaries filled with incense, punk records, blacklight posters, hand-worked jewelry, dugouts, patched jackets, underground art, and conversations that lasted for hours.
Those spaces were built by the old world headshop dwellers, record freaks, punks, metalheads, skaters, artists, mystics, and outcasts that carved culture out of nothing. They created spaces so authentic and welcoming that to outsiders it almost felt exclusive. But the truth was simple …if you were real, you belonged.
We’re beyond grateful to have recently acquired a collection of old Bohemian Music stock: vintage jewelry, punk and heavy metal pieces, classic smokeware, dugouts, and fragments of a culture that helped pave the way for places like Altered Ego.
I grew up going to places like Uncle Johns in Sioux City, Ernie November in Sioux Falls and old Discontent in Fargo, so I’ve kept the culture close. It’s a lifestyle absolutely!
This isn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It’s about keeping that spirit alive here in Billings. Real culture. Real community. Real weirdness.
