Sam Rayburn’s 1916 home tells the candid story of his life beyond the politics of Congress. House of Representatives. The last tour of the house begins at 3 pm.

One of 34 historic attractions operated by the Texas Historical Commission, the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site preserves the real stories of Sam Rayburn, from Bonham farmer to Speaker of the U.S. The house and surrounding outbuildings showcase Mr. Sam’s life and legacy through original furnishings, candid photographs, and personal belongings, displayed as they were when he was alive. Civics - the science of our rights and obligations as citizens. Learning and study are necessary parts of civics education because we have to understand how our government works, how we function within that government, and why we make the decisions we do regarding our government. These rights and obligations also extend to our community. Our local government and our community directly affect our way of life; being a citizen is something we practice all of the time, not just for national elections. All of us now reflect the future of our government – we should never stop learning how it works or not take part in it. We are having two programs this June: our “Civics and Democracy” program on June 19th and our architecture-based summer camp on June 25th and June 26th. “Civics and Democracy” is a free program happening from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on June 19th and is a chance for you to learn about civics, democracy, voting, and volunteering. Our summer camp is “Summer Day the Rayburn Way: Design a House,” which provides children ages 10-12 with the opportunity to learn about basic architecture and create their own 3D house. This camp happens on June 25th and June 26th from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and costs $15 per child, but there is only room for five children per day. We’ve been a historic site for 51 years. Our maintenance specialist, José Diaz, has worked here for 16 of those years. You can’t walk through the site, or even drive by it, without witnessing José’s handiwork and expertise. He was the one replacing the boards on the house’s front porch by hand, the one tending the garden, the one who checked on the site during the worst winter weather, the one driving Mr. Sam’s Cadillac, and the one caring for our animals (he may be Stinky’s favorite person). José is retiring at the end of this month. Please join us in thanking José for his work at this historic place to keep it standing so that you all can experience it. Thank you, José!

We are celebrating America 250 and the beginning of Civic Season with our June program, Civics and Democracy! This free come-and-go program takes place on Friday, June 19th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Learn a little something about civics, voting, volunteering, and our democracy while you make campaign posters for yourself or Sam Rayburn! All ages are welcome!
