“Do Not Fear”
24x36 Oil
Below I speak of our son Geno, my husband Eugen, and our daughter Razel

For Geno, of Geno, and very much a metaphor for him. By the grace of God, Geno was born with an ingrained faith and approaches life’s circumstances without fear. After surviving a severe car crash, about a year later during a light hearted conversation about doing “dangerous” fun things, he said something so matter-of-fact that was difficult for me to hear, but astonishing. He stated “if I’ve learned anything….death is not scary.” Of course his statement didn’t provoke a real positive response in me in the moment, but it did spur a lot of thought over a long period of time. I still think about this comment. Geno has interesting outlooks on challenges and goals. He recently wrote a paper about failure and how important it is in order to have success, so much so, that failure doesn’t actually exist. This painting took years for me to settle on for him. In 2018 I painted a piece for Razel, of Razel on our ranch. The ranch is her happy place, as it is mine. Geno has asked me ever since when I was going to paint him. I personally could relate with Razel’s image and I struggled to find something that encompassed Geno. Him water skiing continually came back to mind. This is a water ski lake outside of Manhattan, Montana that we have been lucky enough to ski on many times. And often on a late Wednesday night, we will be trying to get the last light for skiing or before storms hit. I actually have many beautiful pictures of backlit skiing of Geno, Eugen, and Razel (I don’t water ski). And while this photo was from Geno’s freshman year, he has become a way better skier since then. So I took more of a current Geno, with more slant, into this evocative evening. What inadvertently also happened with this painting, is that Eugen is also so much a part of it. While he is way more practical with decision-making, largely in-part because of wisdom with age, he also approaches the world with confidence and determination, and water skiing is when he is most grounded and content. So now a piece of myself continues with Razel‘s Painting and a piece of Eugen continues with Geno‘s Painting. And someday their kids and their grandkids will be able to have a piece of all of us. And hopefully Geno’s faith in God to not fear will also be passed on through his following generations. I believe, as he heads into high school graduation in less than 2 months, he will go off to college head high, standing tall, and with a big smile on his face. Another Geno quote from when he was about 7 “I like hard things, because when they are challenging, they are FUN!” Thank you Geno, for being inspiring. Love you so much!

In progress, this “commission” and a long time coming….

This is Geno our son, and many years ago I did a painting of Razel our daughter on the ranch. That painting of her was the main showcase painting for a solo art museum show in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2019. He has asked ever since when I was going to do a painting of him! I had never quite figured out what to paint of him that would also represent him well. I had gone through many ideas though! He is graduating in two months and I knew it was appropriate to get a painting done of him before he graduates. I had to put my foot down on myself and get this done on principal before he graduates. This image of him water skiing on the ski lake outside of Manhattan truly shows who he is. He is strong, determined, and confident. He also is extremely observant of all aspects of his surroundings. But one of his favorite things is just the beauty of Montana. This was actually an evening we had a storm rolling in and trying to get in the last ski. He is not afraid of coming storms (literal and metaphorical), but of course we did get out of the water before it became stupid to be out there lol and it was getting dark! I am loving this painting, and it will be hard to give it to him someday when he owns his own home. I will share the completed painting when it’s done of course! In many ways, his dad is represented in this painting also. The same way that I am represented Razel’s painting. I will also share more on this later. Cheers to a lovely week!

My latest commission, “Always Adapting” a 30x40 oil, is varnished, framed, and ready for delivery in a few weeks when my buyer’s new home is complete. The glare from the varnish subdued the shadows in the barn and the variety of marks, colors, and values in the red siding but that’s the nature of photographing artwork! I will share more when it is hung in its intended place of honor. AND I am so excited for them to see this piece in person!!

I absolutely love getting photos from buyers/collectors of where they hang my work! Perfect spot for this painting in Salt Lake City. My goal is to get better at posting these kind of images of where my work ends up. Love the thought of spreading my artwork far and wide like throwing glitter!

Oh Leslie….this painting is as such a special, heavy, beautiful, and moving request by her husband. Cancer took Leslie away from all who loved her, and I can’t process the loss felt by her family, mom, husband, boys…. This friend, who I still want to call to call to check in with, was an absolute force. I lived vicariously through her. She was a tough outdoor woman, amazing mountain biker and skier, and was extremely organized and always researching and reading. Although from Reno, one of their favorite places to bike was Moab. This scene of her and the boys is so thoughtful and peaceful. They later spread some of her ashes here, and her family will hopefully forever be able to look at this painting and feel that they are in some way with her. I hope in any capacity, this painting can provide even a fraction of feeling connected to her when looking at it, like they are right back in Moab, conquering all the challenges and blessings, together. We miss you Leslie❤️‍🩹
