It’s Count Your Buttons day!

The first uniform you picture when you think of a sailor is probably this classic uniform, officially known as Dress Blues but nicknamed the “crackerjack.”

The front flap of the trousers is held in place with 13 buttons. These are often claimed to represent the 13 original colonies, but there is no evidence that this feature was intended as anything but a practical closure.

Check out a Crackerjacks uniform on display in our exhibit “A Salute to Style: Fashion And The U.S. Navy!”

Happy birthday, USS Constitution! On October 21, 1797, the frigate Constitution launched in Boston. Nicknamed “Old Ironsides,” USS Constitution is now the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy. She has been a museum ship since 1907.

This photo from the PSNM artifact collection was taken during her visit to Bremerton in July 1933. At the time, USS Constitution had recently undergone an extensive restoration, and she went on a national tour to thank the country for donating to the restoration effort.

On October 19, 1918, the submarine USS O-2 was commissioned at Bremerton’s Puget Sound Navy Yard. This photo from our artifact collection shows her launching.
She was one of a handful of submarines built here during the World War I era. Joining the fleet just before the war's end, USS O-2 patrolled off the coast of New England. Then, she served as a training ship for submarine crews in Connecticut through World War II.

USS Arizona (BB 39) was commissioned on October 17, 1916.

The battleship visited Bremerton several times over the following decades. In this photo, taken on August 2, 1937, she was at the Puget Sound Navy Yard for a scheduled overhaul for routine maintenance.

USS Arizona sank on December 7, 1941 during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She remains there today as a memorial to the American Sailors who lost their lives that day.

PSNM wishes a very happy 125th birthday to the city of Bremerton! Bremerton was incorporated on October 15, 1901, ten years after the founding of Naval Station Puget Sound (now PSNS & IMF on the Waterfront). At the time of the city’s founding, it had approximately 500 residents.

This image of Pacific Avenue in downtown Bremerton was taken in the 1920s by local photographer H.E. Wale. He also photographed many naval vessels and other local Navy subjects, and many of his photographs are now in the Puget Sound Navy Museum’s artifact collection.

Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Navy! The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established on October 13, 1775 for the Revolutionary War. Since then, this date has become an annual celebration of our Navy’s proud history and great future.

Celebrate the Navy’s birthday this week by visiting our temporary exhibit “We Have the Watch: Mastering the Ordinary to Accomplish the Extraordinary,” which explores the daily lives of Navy sailors across two and a half centuries, showcasing how their training, traditions, and everyday duties contribute to extraordinary acts of service.

On October 7, 1904, the battleship USS Nebraska (BB 14) was launched in Seattle. She was built by the Moran Bros shipyard, commissioned in 1907, and joined the Great White Fleet on their voyage around the world. Later, she went on to serve in World War I. USS Nebraska remains the only battleship ever built in Washington state.

This invitation to the ship's launching is a recent addition to the Puget Sound Navy Museum's artifact collection.

This week, Navy personnel across Navy Region Northwest shift to winter uniforms! That means that sailors will begin wearing their Dress Blues, swapping out the darker uniform for the Dress Whites they’ve worn all summer. The white uniform is traditionally made of a lighter and more breathable fabric, making it better suited for warmer weather. They would both be worn to the same kinds of events, only differing in season.

Check out both versions of enlisted sailors’ dress uniforms in our temporary exhibit “A Salute to Style: Fashion and the U.S. Navy”!

NOW ON DISPLAY: A historic sewing machine once used at PSNS & IMF on the Waterfront!

This sewing machine was used in the Shipyard’s Sail Loft by workers like Dina Olsen, shown here.

She brought her industrial sewing expertise to the Shipyard in 1905. Dina had previously worked in Seattle during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, sewing tents and sleeping bags for gold prospectors headed off to Alaska. She worked at Bremerton’s Puget Sound Navy Yard until her 1925 retirement.

Visit our exhibit “A Heritage of Excellence” to see this important piece of shipyard history firsthand.
