Happy Juneteenth!

Today, we commemorate June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Orders No. 3, informing thousands of African Americans still held in bo***ge in Texas that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863. Since the news was announced, Juneteenth has been observed as a day of celebration, community, and freedom.

The Brenham Heritage Museum is open today from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We invite you to visit and view our Juneteenth regalia and special displays exploring the history and legacy of emancipation in Texas.

Also, be sure to mark your calendars for The Juneteenth Griot program on Sunday, June 28, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Join Kijana Wiseman, M.Ed., as she brings the history and traditions of Juneteenth to life through storytelling, music, and song.

What is a Griot?
A griot (GREE-oh) is a West African historian, storyteller, musician, and poet who preserves culture and history through spoken word and song. Today, the griot tradition continues through artists, educators, and storytellers who share history, celebrate cultural identity, and connect communities through performance. Using music, poetry, storytelling, and lived experience, they bring the lessons and voices of the past into the present.

Kijana Wiseman brings this timeless tradition to life in a contemporary sense. An internationally traveled performer and educator, she has shared powerful stories in 23 countries across three continents, using the art of storytelling to honor heritage, preserve history, and inspire future generations. On June 28, Kijana Wiseman will visit the Brenham Heritage Museum to share the story of Juneteenth through the griot tradition, bringing history to life through storytelling, music, and performance while honoring the journey from enslavement to freedom.

While you're visiting, feel free to look at our newest temporary exhibit about the Freedmen's Bureau!

This summer, the Brenham Heritage Museum is proud to participate in the Blue Star Museums program, offering free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families. This special offer begins on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 16, 2026, and continues through Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026.

Please help us spread the word to the military families in your community.

Blue Star Museums is a nationwide initiative designed to provide active-duty military families with opportunities to explore and enjoy cultural institutions during the summer months. The program recognizes the sacrifices made by military families and offers meaningful experiences for those who may have faced deployments, relocations, and time apart.

We invite military families to visit the Brenham Heritage Museum and discover the rich history of Brenham and Washington County through our exhibits, artifacts, and stories.

Plan your visit by checking our hours of operation at www.bhmtexas.org.
