Maynard Monrow reimagines text as a visual and visceral experience.

In this clip from the Highlights Tour of “Common Sense,” Monrow (Maynard Monrow) discusses the ways he reimagines personal, philosophical, and political text to create language-based art.

Monrow’s work in “Common Sense” is included alongside two foundational texts from the Revolutionary War era by Thomas Paine as well as contemporary works that explore community, progress, and power marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

If Lady Gaga’s Chromatica was a dress… 💗

For the visual world surrounding her 2020 album Chromatica, Lady Gaga wore Iris van Herpen's extraordinary Hydrozoa dress, from the designer’s Sensory Seas collection.

Created in collaboration with Australian artist Shelee Carruthers, the dress transforms Carruther’s fluid paintings of ocean life—with their swirling turquoise and purple forms—into a three-dimensional look.

Van Herpen fashioned waves of finely laser-cut PETG, heat-bonded to layers of digitally printed glass organza, creating a structure that seems to ripple and float around the body like marine life moving through water.

It was an especially fitting look for Chromatica, the fantastical world Lady Gaga imagined for an album centered on color, sound, transformation, and healing through music and dance.

See the Hydrozoa dress—along with more than 140 extraordinary creations—in “Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses,” now on view.

The Pearlman Collection then and now. 🖼️

Tomorrow, we welcome you to “Cézanne to Modigliani: Gifts of Modern Art from the Pearlman Collection”—an outstanding collection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints.

This is the seventh exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum dedicated to the collection of Henry and Rose Pearlman, which has been shown here more than at any other institution.

Initially drawn to Chaïm Soutine and Amedeo Modigliani, Henry soon acquired works by predecessors Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, and his favorite artist, Paul Cézanne.
