What remains of ancient Babylon today?

In 6th century B.C., Babylon flourished, becoming a city renowned for its brilliant colors and monumental architecture. With stone scarce in southern Mesopotamia, builders used molded, glazed bricks to adorn the city's gates and buildings with vibrant reliefs.

The most important street in Babylon was the Processional Way, leading from the inner city through the Ishtar Gate. The gate was decorated with figures of bulls and dragons that symbolized different gods. North of the gate, the roadway was lined with striding lions—associated with Ishtar, the goddess of love and war. This relief served to protect the street and was a guide for ritual processions towards the temple.

Meet Artisan in Residence Joy Harvey!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vacheron Constantin Artisan Residency Program seeks to recognize artisanal practices that revive, reimagine, or reinterpret traditional knowledge and technical skill.

Harvey challenged idealized notions of the past while celebrating imperfections, craftsmanship, and the ways objects and people are shaped by human experience.

In The Met collection, Harvey drew on decaying palaces, Gothic ruins, and aging women to celebrate beauty in its present state and explore the passage of time.

On this day in 1924, the Surrealist Manifesto was published and launched an artistic revolution. Today, The Met launches a new annual digital publication, “The Bluff Almanach,” focused on Dada and Surrealism.

The inaugural issue centers on the artist Man Ray, the visionary known for his radical experiments that pushed the limits of photography, painting, sculpture, and film.

For the Dada and Surrealism buffs, dive into Alex Da Corte’s one-night-only lecture as Marcel Duchamp, Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan on scoring Man Ray’s films, and Man Ray’s arrival in 1930s colonial Korea.

Meet Artisan in Residence Aspen Golann!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vacheron Constantin Artisan Residency Program seeks to recognize artisanal practices that revive, reimagine, or reinterpret traditional knowledge and technical skill.

Golann, a woodworker, explored early American school girl embroidery in a monumental vessel. Rather than reproduce a particular historic form, she wanted the "Crewel Cabinet" to feel bodily, feminine, and alive through the decorative language of its carved surface.

What objects can you find in Lee Krasner's mosaic table? 👀

As they settled into Springs, Krasner embarked on an unlikely home improvement project. A couple of wagon wheels discovered in the barn and discarded tesserae (small tiles)—left over from a mural Jackson Po***ck had designed years earlier for an unrealized commission—became the start for two mosaic tabletops.

Inside each iron rim, Krasner added the tesserae, broken glass, shells, pebbles, keys, coins, and flattened pieces of costume jewelry to create a composition in which colored shards of varying sizes and shapes swirl across the surface in no specific pattern.

Po***ck poured cement to set the arrangement, and a local ironworker added legs to complete the table. The all-over imagery and the freeness of the design anticipate Krasner’s approach to forms in paintings she called her "Little Images."

Where do dragons roam?

In ancient American art, they weren't just imagined—they were worn. This Panamanian pendant depicts fantastical creatures with their heads oriented toward the wearer when worn.

The silver-and-gold nose ornament combines intertwined serpents with snarling canine heads to create a powerful, two-headed creature. Dozens of tiny dangles hang from the creatures' bodies, catching the light with every movement.

When worn, the ornament would have transformed the wearer's face into a dazzling, animated display—making the creatures appear to quiver with energy and projecting their power to everyone who saw them.

Meet Artisan in Residence Ibrahim Said!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vacheron Constantin Artisan Residency seeks to recognize artisanal practices that revive, reimagine, or reinterpret traditional knowledge and technical skill.

Ceramicist Ibrahim Said explored ancient Egyptian and Islamic traditions through ceramic vessels and patterns. In The Met collection, Said drew inspiration from multiple objects including a bottle and Islamic water jug filter to create his vessel.

Working alongside the Vacheron Constantin artisans reinforced his shared commitment to craftsmanship, detail, and ornamentation. Said was inspired by their dedication to preserving the value of handmande artistry and cultural heritage.

📣 Now open! See "There Are No Words: Si Lewen's Parade" on view at The Met.

“The Parade” is an epic cycle of 63 charcoal, pencil, and ink drawings conceived by Si Lewen in the aftermath of World War II. The work unfolds a visual narrative on war, memory, and the human condition, informed by the artist’s extraordinary life—from fleeing N**i persecution with his family and immigrating to the U.S. to arriving at the Buchenwald concentration camp shortly after its liberation in 1945 while serving in the U.S. Army.

Experienced together as a sequence, the drawings carry viewers from military pageantry to conflict, devastation, and mourning through the cumulative force of their imagery.

The power of "The Parade" lies not only in its historical origins but in its ability to speak across generations with urgency, asking viewers to confront the persistent cycles of violence that continue to shape our world.

🌴 At first glance, it's a sunny beachside scene, likely set in the Dominican Republic, where the artist has a home. Look closer and you'll find layers of race, class, and maybe a little tension.

Five figures face us head-on, as if waiting to be photographed. A trio of musicians plays a small drum, a guitar, and a güira while wind-bent palms seem to sway to the merengue. Off to the side, a man who resembles the artist stares away, unmoved by the serenade.

Rafael Ferrer, born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as a conceptual artist making ephemeral, politically poetic work. By the 1980s he turned to painting, using a style rooted in Caribbean folk art.

Bright, rhythmic color and playful distortions of scale and proportion tell a story about the people and places of the Caribbean, and the complicated relationships between the U.S., Puerto Rico, and neighboring islands.

Ci******es and fruit scatter the floor. Bare bulbs hang from the ceiling. Seven musicians stare blankly ahead in an overcrowded room, while a pair of dancers, smaller and wildly alive, kick up their legs. You can almost smell the sweat, to***co, liquor, and cologne that fill the space.

Fernando Botero's art often depicts scenes of leisure, with people drinking and dancing. These satirical renderings may seem humorous at first, but they are often threaded with social and political commentary.

Lions, griffins, and dragons, oh my! 🐉

Aquamaniles, which are water vessels used for washing hands, served both ceremonial and secular purposes. Those made in the shape of an animal are among the most distinctive products of medieval craftsmen with the most popular being lions, dragons, and griffins.

This striking vessel is shaped like a dragon, supported by its legs and wing tips. Its tail curls into a handle, and water was poured out through the hooded figure held between the dragon’s teeth. The detailed scales and fine casting make this aquamanile especially impressive.
