How are living beings and the environment connected?

For The Genesis Facade Commission, artist Jeffrey Gibson transformed The Met’s exterior with four monumental animal sculptures—a deer, coyote, squirrel, and hawk.

Drawing from his distinctive style fusing Indigenous worldviews and imagery with abstraction, text, and color, Gibson challenges us to reconsider the non-human world and foster greater awareness and empathy for the animals around us.

This sculpture is the real life version of the 🤝 emoji!

In 1853, pioneering American sculptor Harriet Hosmer met poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and proposed an unusual artistic collaboration: a cast of their interlocked right hands.

Elizabeth Browning agreed on one condition—that Hosmer complete the casting herself, rather than delegating it to studio assistants. The sculpture captured the love between the Brownings, who had eloped to Italy seven years earlier, and their close friendship with Hosmer.

Novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne characterized the sculpture as "symbolizing the individuality and heroic union of two high, poetic lives!"

A new chapter for fashion at The Met is about to begin. The Condé M. Nast Galleries, a new nearly 12,000-square-foot space at the heart of The Met, will open in less than a week!
