Who was “Uncle Hi”?

Long before the Buckeye Valley Museum had a building of its own, Isaac Hiram Parkman was busy preserving the stories of the people who built this community.

Known affectionately as “Uncle Hi,” Parkman wore many hats in Buckeye—postmaster, justice of the peace, agricultural promoter, and organizer of the Old Settlers’ Union. His connection to the canals and irrigation system also put him close to the water that made Buckeye’s agricultural future possible.

But perhaps his most lasting contribution was his determination to save the stories, photographs, records, and memories of Buckeye’s early families.

That collection became part of the foundation of the Buckeye Museum we know today.

Water. Community. Memory.

Three things that helped shape Buckeye—and the legacy of one man who made sure its history would not be forgotten.

🌼💀 DON’T FORGET: Nicho Box Day is October 16 at 3 p.m.! 💀🌼

A little reminder to join us at the Buckeye Valley Museum for a special day of creativity, remembrance, and honoring those we love.

Nicho boxes are small, decorative shadow boxes that often tell a story or honor a person, place, or memory. They are a beautiful tradition within Mexican folk art and are often used to celebrate and remember loved ones through meaningful images, objects, and symbols.

For our Nicho Box Day, we’ll be creating our own special boxes together! 🎨❤️

🖼️ Want to make yours personal? Bring a photo of a loved one to include in your Nicho box. It can be someone you’d like to remember, honor, or simply keep close to your heart.

✨ All supplies are provided for those who register, and the class is FREE!

Come spend some time creating, sharing stories, and celebrating the people and memories that mean the most to us.

Cotton has played a major role in the Buckeye Valley.

Long before today’s neighborhoods and developments, cotton fields stretched across the valley and became an important part of Buckeye’s agricultural economy. The crop shaped local businesses, farming families, and everyday life in ways that are still part of our community’s story today.

🧡 Help Us Create a Community Ofrenda 💀🌼

This October, the Buckeye Valley Museum is creating a Community Ofrenda—a place to remember, honor, and celebrate the people who are important to us.

You can participate by bringing a nicho from home or by creating one at our FREE Nicho Box Workshop on October 16 (REGISTRATION REQUIRED). You do not have to attend the workshop to participate!

Our community ofrenda will be on display throughout the month of October, and we invite you to add your own special remembrance. Please keep nichos to a reasonable size so we have room for everyone.

And don't miss Zarco Guerrero on October 8, as he brings Día de los Mu***os to life through storytelling and his incredible handmade masks.

Come share a memory. Celebrate a loved one. Be part of our community ofrenda. 🧡🌼

💀🎭 DON’T MISS ZARCO GUERRERO! 🌼

Just a friendly reminder that Zarco Guerrero will be at the Buckeye Valley Museum on October 8th at 1:30 PM for his incredible Día de los Mu***os presentation!

If you haven’t seen Zarco before, this is a presentation you’ll want to experience. A lifelong artisan, mask maker, and performer, Zarco creates his own masks and costumes and uses them to bring the traditions and stories of Día de los Mu***os to life. As he performs, he takes on different characters and shares this beautiful tradition in a way that is engaging, entertaining, and unlike any of our other presentations.

Expect storytelling, history, humor, handmade art, and plenty of heart! ❤️

📰 INTERESTING NEWS FROM BUCKEYE’S PAST!

Every month, we dig into the old Buckeye Valley News and pull out stories that deserve another moment in the spotlight. We’ve found some pretty amazing stories in those pages—but this month, we’re turning the story back on the newspaper printer himself!

Park Richard Mitten started the Buckeye Valley News in the Ware Building in 1910. He and his two sons even lived in the building while helping provide printing and newspaper services to Buckeye’s growing community.

It’s a great glimpse into one family’s influence on early Buckeye—and a reminder that our old newspapers hold so much more than yesterday’s news!
