Look familiar? 👀⛏️

If you've visited the , you might recognize this! This is our hoist house from around 1928 - the Orphan Girl Mine hoist with the oiler and engineer doing their jobs, keeping the mine running.

Here at the Museum, you can still see these exact same pieces of equipment today. In the same place. Standing where those miners once stood.

That's not just reading about history - that's WALKING IN IT.

Come experience what it felt like to work in the hoist house, see the equipment that moved miners and ore, and feel the space where real people did real work.

History isn't something that happened somewhere else. It happened here. And it's still here waiting for you.

In the latest episode of "Drifts & Tales", Executive Director Jeanette Kopf and co-host Dan Rapkoch dig into the story behind the mining equipment at the - and spoiler alert, it's way deeper than headframes and ore carts!

Here's the thing: ore sitting underground isn't wealth - it's potential. Someone has to mine it, transport it, smelt it, finance it, insure it, market it, defend ownership claims in court, move it to customers.

That's why the Copper Kings - Marcus Daly, William A. Clark, F. Augustus Heinze - became SO powerful. They didn't just want to mine. They wanted to control the entire system: the railroads, the smelters, the newspapers, the banks, the courts, the legislature.

Sound surprisingly modern? Because it is. That's why their story still resonates today.

OFFICIAL CALL FOR ARTISTS: Can you draw the unseen? 🎨⚒️

Deep within the granite drifts thousands of feet beneath Butte, generations of underground miners reported hearing a distinct knocking along the timbered walls. Were they warning spirits, ancient protectors, or mischievous sprites?

Today, the World Museum of Mining officially opens submissions for our "Shadows in the Drift" Tommyknocker Art Contest! We want artists of all ages to help us visualize these legendary subterranean spirits.

🏆 Categories & Divisions
Youth Division (Ages 12 & Under): 2D Artwork (Drawing, Painting, Ink)

Teens & Adults (Ages 13+): 2D Artwork (Drawing, Painting, Printmaking)

3D / Sculpture Division (Open to All Ages): Clay, Wood, Metal, or Mixed Media

Submissions Open: NOW (Monday, October 5)

Submission Deadline: Sunday, November 3 at 3:30 PM MDT

Public Voting & Judging: November 4 – 7

Winners Revealed: Monday, November 9

Download the official entry form from our website or pick one up at the Museum Gift Shop.

Create your 2D or 3D artwork along with a 2–3 sentence artist backstory about your Tommyknocker.

Drop off physical artwork at the World Museum of Mining Gift Shop during normal operating hours!

Winners in each division receive prize packages, family museum passes, and featured placement at the museum!
