One of Canton South's best athletes will share his story about playing for the Wildcats and making the transition to the pros.

COME HEAR Mark speak next Wednesday, September 9th at 6pm at the Canton Twp Community Center.

Canton South High School has been the home of many talented athletes through the years with our next speaker being one of the best of the modern era. MARK MILLER was born into the well-known and respected family of George and Mary Miller. His siblings are Tim, Ron and Lynn. Mark graduated from South in 1974 where he was the football quarterback, basketball forward and baseball shortstop. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame and named to the Repository's 1970s All-Decade team.

Mark graduated from Bowling Green State University where he majored in biology and play football. Some of his honors included: MAC Player of the Week ( 3x), Team MVP (2x), achieved 14 school passing/total offense records and was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame (1983) and BGSU Football 'Ring of Honor' (2019).
His football prowess resulted in him being drafted in the 3rd round by the Cleveland Browns where he played in 1978 and 1979. Mark went on to be a member of the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders teams.

Following his football playing years, Mark shared his football knowledge and talent as a coach on the college and high school levels. Mark also served as a play by play and color analyst for BGSU football and high school football and basketball games for 30 years. He enjoyed a lengthy career as a school district Director of Business before returning to Stark County and working as a supervisor at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Local folks also hear him call high school football games as a color analyst at WHBC.

Mark will be inducted in the Canton South Hall of Distinction on October 1st. See less

A few days ago we posted this picture of a 1917 souvenir from the Sunnyside School, District 11 Canton Township and asked if anyone knew his name.

His name was Lorin E. Bixler. Born in Louisville in 1893.

He was the teacher and was leaving to serve in World War I. He gave his last students there this souvenir. His motives can only be guessed. Maybe he thought he might not come back. He did!

This one was given to one of his students - E. A. Thouvenin

He served in France from November 17, 1918 to July 7, 1919.

He was discharged July 17, 1919.

This is a most sad posting. The first article speaks of the wounding and imminent death of a Pike Twp resident, Jeremiah Holm. The article speaks of the kind words his superior officer, Captain Steiner, spoke of him. Another article published on the same day informs us of Captain Steiner's death shortly after. **STOCK IMAGE**

August 8th, 1863, at General Hospital, near Gettysburg, Pa., of wounds received at the battle of Gettysburg, JEREMIAH J. HOLM, 1st Sergt, Co. G, 107th O. V. I., aged 24 years.

DIED OF WOUNDS –In the list of Pike township boys, wounded at Gettysburg, published several weeks since, it will be remembered that Jeremiah J. Holm had both legs badly torn by a shell. Poor Holm has since died. His remains were brought home last week and laid to rest among the scenes of his youth. Deceased was laudably ambitious and highly intelligent as well as brave and true. He was an occasional correspondent of this paper, and our readers are indebted to him for many life-like portrayals of scenes and incidents, on Potomac and Rappahannock, over the initials "J. J." He was 1st Sergeant of Company G, 107th Regiment. Capt. Steiner spoke of Holm in the highest terms, but thought he could not survive. Alas! both the noble Captain and the not less noble Sergeant have yielded their lives in behalf of our liberties. The loss of such men is infinite and irreparable.

DEATH OF CAPT. STEINER. –It is truly a painful duty to be compelled to announce that Capt. Steiner, of Company D, 107th Regiment, who was shot through the left shoulder at the battle of Gettysburg, and who was subsequently brought home, on the 18th ult., died on Thursday night last. He was buried on Saturday, at Sparta.
Capt. Steiner was in college when the war broke out, preparing himself for the ministry. At the first summons he volunteered, and passed through the three months campaign in West Virginia. He then returned to his home in Pike township, and recruited the major part of the Company, which he commanded, until his fall at Gettysburg.
For some years the deceased had been a regular contributor to this paper. From a familiar acquaintance and knowledge of him, we feel fully warranted in saying that in his loss, our county and community, and the sacred cause of truth and right have suffered a grievous calamity. What is there that everything that is good and virtuous might not expect from the support and example of such a pure life as his, such rare mental endowments, such untiring industry and such sublime, self-sacrificing heroism?
Capt. Steiner was hopeful of recovery, even until the last. But renewed life and strength had but one meaning to him. He longed to return to his post of duty and danger. That for which he died was the very same for which he most longed to live and labor and suffer.
